BADDECK ? A 63-year-old man watching his son compete at the 2012 MCT Men?s Amateur Championship on Wednesday collapsed in a wooded area along the course and later died.

Tournament organizers said Desmond Lewin, father of Ken-Wo Golf Club member Peter Lewin, collapsed in the woods on the No. 11 hole while looking for an errant golf ball at about 9:20 a.m.

Bell Bay Golf Club general manager and head pro Michael Gillan said both Bell Bay and Nova Scotia Golf Association staff immediately called 911 and CPR was performed at the scene until the ambulance arrived.

The elder Lewin was transported to Victoria County Memorial Hospital. NSGA officials visited the hospital Wednesday afternoon and were informed by staff that the man had died.

?Unfortunately, we had a tragedy (Wednesday) at the golf course shortly after 9 a.m.,? said Gillan. ?Mr. Desmond Lewin, the father of Peter Lewin, passed away suddenly due to complications of a heart attack on the golf course as he was watching his son play the Nova Scotia amateur.

?It?s an unfortunate incident here at the club, and Bell Bay and the Nova Scotia Golf Association want to wish their family and friends our deepest sympathy in this tough time. We?re here for them and, hopefully, we can get through this tough time.?

Sean Stuart of Bedford, a member at Ashburn Golf and Country Club in Halifax and co-leader after the opening round, was golfing in the group with Lewin and Andrew MacPherson of Oakfield Golf and Country Club when the incident occurred.

?We were looking for Peter?s ball in the woods and the next thing we know, (Desmond Lewin) fell on top of Andrew and went down,? Stuart said before it was learned that Lewin had died. ?Luckily, Andrew knew CPR, but I don?t know if it was going to be enough because he was working on him for a while.

?It was tough to play after that, but it got easier. I just tried to think about other things.?

Gillan said the flag at Bell Bay will be set at half-mast for the remainder of the tournament.
