Amped Wireless High Power Wireless-N 600mW Gigabit Dual Band Access Point (AP20000G)

Amped Wireless' High Power Wireless-N 600mW Gigabit Dual Band Access Point (AP20000G) is a piece of networking hardware that can either be used to bring wireless access to an existing network, or to upgrade wireless networks with legacy 802.11x technology to the more modern 802.11n standard. The access point (AP) delivers excellent throughput, especially on the 5GHz band and provides very good coverage but lacks some more business-oriented features of some SMB access points on the market.

Specs
The AP20000G operates at the 2.4 and 5GHz bands. The device supports up to 600Mbps of theoretical throughput. Dual amplifiers on both the 2.4 and 5GHz wireless radios help the access point with wireless signal coverage. Two high gain 5dBi dual band antennas screw into the antennas ports on the casing.

The access point features five Gigabit Ethernet ports?one for wiring to a router or switch and four for connecting other networking devices to leverage Gigabit speeds. There's also a USB 2.0 port for sharing data on connected USB storage drives.

Users can operate the access point on an included stand, or flat on a desktop. The device is also wall-mountable.

Set Up and Configuration
There's very little to set up; the process is very easy. I powered the AP and connected its port labeled "network" to a switch on my network. I also connected a laptop to one of the ports on the AP labeled "Wired Devices."

The AP takes a few seconds to configure itself. There are several LEDs on the device's front panel that light up when power is on, when a device is connected to one of the Ethernet ports, and when there is an active network connection.

Once the LEDs were lit, I could see two new SSIDs, created by the AP20000G in my laptop's list of wireless networks. The AP creates an SSID for each band. The security key for each is printed on the bottom of the access point.

Of course, you will want to change the default SSID password and the AP's admin password. To configure the AP, I just opened a browser on my laptop and pointed to the URL: setup. ampedwireless.com. The interface has the same neat, intuitive-to-navigate design of Amped Wireless' High Power Wireless-N 600mW Gigabit Dual Band Router (R20000G).

The AP20000G shares some features that are built-in across Amped Wireless' product line. One such feature is the ability to control the wireless coverage area. Radio buttons allow you to set coverage at 100 percent (which is the default setting), down to 15 percent. Lowering the coverage area means lowering the range? area in which the AP broadcasts itself, which may be desired for security reasons, and lowers the overall output power.

Users also have the option to disable the wireless radios based on a schedule by day and time Access to the AP can be granted or denied based on a MAC address control list.

The AP is designed to extend wireless network connectivity in small business networks and homes. I would recommend it as an AP more for consumers and for smaller business networks not requiring a lot of security or controls. This is because, aside from RADIUS authentication support, there are fewer business-class features in the AP20000 than some other SMB APs we've tested. For instance, there's no native firewall or Active Directory integration, as there is in a true SMB AP such as the Meraki MR16.

While the AP20000G supports up to eight guest networks, you can't create a custom splash page for guests that access the AP as you can with the Meraki MR16?device.? However, each guest network on the AP20000G can be set with its own login credentials and you can limit bandwidth for each network.

Also, there's no AP isolation preventing wireless clients from communicating with one another when they are connected to the AP which may be a security concern for some.

These lack of features may be fine for smaller businesses especially ones with routers that have these features such already, such as a built-in firewall. However, those needing APs with more business controls may want to look into business-class APs from Meraki or HP.

I found the same lengthy reboot required for just about changing any settings in the AP20000G as in Amped Wireless' R20000G router. A settings' change requires a 70 second reboot of the device which can be slightly annoying when you are first configuring the AP the way you want.

Performance
Amped Wireless' main focus is on range. You get good range and very good throughput, in fact the top throughput we've tested for an AP at 5 GHz, with the AP20000G.

The speeds are more on par with a dual-band wireless router. In 5 GHz mode at 30 feet, the AP2000G clocked a very impressive 113 Mbps. In comparison, many of the SMB APs on the market have tested quite a bit slower. For example, Meraki's MR16 AP? also a dual-band 802.11n AP? only managed 49 Mbps at the same distance in 5 GHz mode.

As expected, the AP20000G was slower, albeit, still with decent throughput in 2.4 GHz-N only mode, achieving an average throughput of 74 Mbps. Below is a chart comparing the AP20000G with other APs at 5 GHz:

Speedy, But Biz Feature-Light
For home users looking to extend a wireless network in a coverage area where a less-powerful wireless extender wouldn't get the job done, the AP20000G is an ideal piece of networking hardware.

Although this is a fast access point with very good coverage, business networks that need more control over security and user access may need to look into access points specifically marketed to the SMB. On its own,? the AP20000G is solid hardware showcasing Amped Wireless' commitment to delivering network products that are fast-performing and able to cover large areas. The AP20000G is a 3.5 star earner and is a very good access point.

Palestinian president wants Israelis to talk peace

(AP Photo/Ariel Schalit)

(AP) ? The Palestinian president will invite Israeli politicians to the West Bank to try to make sure peacemaking is on the new government's agenda, a senior official said Thursday, even as a top Israeli hard-liner proposed sidelining the polarizing issue.

Hoping to capitalize on the unexpected strength of moderates in Israel's incoming parliament, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas wants to sit down with representatives of Israeli parliamentary factions to discuss the possibility of settling the Israeli-Palestinian conflict peacefully, senior Palestinian official Yasser Abed Rabbo told The Associated Press.

"We invite the Israeli parties, particularly the new ones, for dialogue on future accords," Abed Rabbo said.

He did not say when the invitations would go out, but emphasized that Abbas wanted the meeting to take place before Israel forms its next government ? a process that is expected to take several weeks.

Tuesday's parliamentary vote ended in a surprise deadlock between a hawkish, religious bloc and a camp of centrist, secular and Arab parties. While Benjamin Netanyahu, as head of the largest single party in parliament, appears set to remain prime minister, he can't put together a stable coalition without drawing in moderates beyond his traditional hardline and religious base.

He has already extended his hand to a new centrist party that advocates more serious efforts to end the decades-old Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Peace talks reached an impasse before Netanyahu came into office four years ago and never resumed in earnest. The main obstacle during his tenure has been continued construction of Jewish settlements in areas captured in the 1967 war, the West Bank and east Jerusalem. Israel pulled out of the Gaza Strip in 2005 but still controls access by land, sea and air.

Abed Rabbo said the Palestinians have not dropped two longstanding conditions for negotiations ? Israel must stop settlement building and the contours of the Palestinian state must be negotiated on the basis of the borders Israel held before 1967.

While opinion polls indicate a majority of Israelis back the establishment of a Palestinian state alongside Israel, peacemaking was barely mentioned as a campaign issue, reflecting widespread doubts that peace is possible after decades of violence and stop-and-go talks.

Still, the election's outcome defied forecasts that Netanyahu and his allies would steer a government with an even more hard-line makeup.

Instead, his top partner is likely to be Yesh Atid, a new party with moderate views on peacemaking that has emerged as Israel's new power broker.

Yesh Atid's leader, political newcomer Yair Lapid, has said he will not sit in a government that is not seriously pursuing peace with the Palestinians. But the focus of his campaign has been mostly on helping the needs of Israel's struggling middle class, raising questions about how hard he will push on the peace issue.

Lawmaker Avigdor Lieberman, a Netanyahu ally, told Israel Radio on Thursday that the next government must focus on domestic issues rather than peacemaking to avoid political paralysis, given lawmakers' sharply divergent views.

"If we want to founder from the outset, and embark upon endless internal struggles, then make foreign policy the top priority," he said.

"If we want the government to be effective and accomplish things, and leave a strong, significant imprint, I think everyone understands the need for domestic changes is dramatic, and that is the order of the day. So leave the foreign issues aside," he said.

Netanyahu has hinted that is the direction he is going in through the two brief statements he has given since the election results came in late Tuesday. Both statements have focused on the need to build a broad coalition to address pressing domestic issues.

Lieberman's ultranationalist Yisrael Beitenu party teamed up on a joint list with Netanyahu's Likud for Tuesday's election.

Tax Preparers: Helping Take the Stress Out of Filing Income Tax ...

The subject of tax preparation is something that many business owners do not wish to think about too often. Aside from the fact that they part ways with a certain amount of their earnings, to the average business owner income tax preparation and filing is a stressful and highly arduous task that involves a lot of math and so little time. For this reason, instead of diving into the task themselves, business owners would often hire the services of tax preparation services firms such as Karliner Tax Services in order to do it for them.

There are several key benefits to having a third-party entity handle tax filing and preparation. For one, these companies allow business owners to focus on matters that contribute to the growth of the company such as improving products and services, and coming up with innovative marketing strategies. This can be especially true for those whose income tax returns are a bit more complicated because of the various deductions and tax benefits that are available to them. These tax preparation services firms can also focus on giving their clients a carefully studied assessment of their current tax situation, and helping them with professional advice about how to maximize the tax benefits that they can be eligible for. With their advice, business owners become wiser and more educated about the taxes that they pay for on a regular basis. Another important benefit to making use of tax preparation services firms is that they make sure that their clients? income tax return forms are submitted on time, thus saving them the trouble of having to face legal consequences or paying for late fees and penalties as imposed by the IRS.

Founded by Ron Karliner and headquartered in Huntington Beach, CA, Karliner Tax Services is one of the companies that specialize in tax preparation. Their services have helped hundreds of people get through some of the most complicated tax-related issues, and they continue to do so to this day. Ron Karliner is a highly trained former IRS agent himself, which means he knows the US tax system and how to make sure that his clients are getting the exact number of tax deductions and benefits. Aside from having helped a large number of business owners keep away from various tax-related issues, Ron Karliner and company take pride in the speed and efficiency of their tax preparation service. The company is a BBB-accredited establishment that has received an A rating.

Samsung keeps lagging in the Windows Phone race

Samsung Windows Phone 8 SalesSamsung

It could be that Samsung (005930) simply does not care, but the world?s biggest smartphone brand is off to a notably weak start in the Windows Phone 8 race. On a British website tracking handset sales across all UK carriers, Nokia?s (NOK) Lumia 920 is at No.5 and the Lumia 820 is at No.10. Samsung?s ATIV S does not crack the top-10 list.

[More from BGR: BlackBerry 10 OS walkthrough, BlackBerry Z10 pricing]

At Expansys UK, the black Lumia 920 holds the top spot on the best-seller list and the yellow Lumia 920 is on the pre-order list; there are no Samsung Windows Phone models on the best-seller list, while the gray ATIV S is at No.8 on pre-order list.

[More from BGR: BlackBerry Z10 compared to iPhone 5 on camera [video]]

At Expansys Germany, there are three Lumia models ahead of the ATIV S. Even at Expansys France, several Nokia or HTC (2498) models trump the ATIV S on best-seller and pre-order lists. Samsung?s brand has been stronger in France than in the UK or Germany over the past couple of years.

Two Lumias made it to?Dial A Phone?s?most popular list, but the ATIV S does not. Lumias also trump the ATIV S on the most popular phone lists from?Phonehouse Germany and UK. The big British site Phones 4 U splashes two Lumias on its front page list of eight contract models ? no ATIV S in sight.

Samsung clearly had a slower start in Windows Phone 8 market, with Nokia rolling out the Lumia 920 in November and HTC getting its budget phone, the Windows Phone 8S, out by the third week of December. But it?s striking that in the third week of January, Samsung still appears to lag behind Lumia models and in many cases HTC?s Windows range. Usually, newer launches tend to pop in the sales charts at least for a couple of weeks; and Samsung typically gets its models strong placement in Europe?s leading handset retail websites.

It is possible that Samsung simply wants to prioritize the hot Galaxy S III and Note II models; and these two are being promoted strongly by European carriers and retailers. Regardless of the reason why, the ATIV S? surprisingly weak showing seems to be giving Nokia and HTC room to exploit the marketing support that carriers are allocating to Windows Phone 8.

Five local organizations receive grants to help fight childhood obesity

A healthcare company awarded more than $7,000 in grants to several organizations in Indiana, including $5,000 in grants for youth-led projects that address childhood obesity in Indianapolis.

UnitedHealth Heroes, an initiative created by UnitedHealthcare and Youth Service America, issued grants up to $1,000 to programs that include both an activity element and a service component that increases awareness, provides direct service, enables advocacy on behalf of a cause, or features youth philanthropy around the issue of childhood obesity.

According to recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in three children is obese or overweight, putting them on the road to lifelong chronic conditions like diabetes and heart disease.

UnitedHealth Heroes was designed to encourage young people, working with educators and youth leaders, to create and implement walking, running or hiking programs aimed at helping fight childhood obesity.

Local UnitedHealth Heroes grant recipients include:

  • Boys and Girls Club of Indianapolis received a $1,000 grant to facilitate the Triple Play Run/Walk Challenge at the George Buck Club. Participants will practice the correct way to warm-up and stretch while also learning about hydration and nutrition, good running form and breathing and the value of keeping a regular running log or journal. In addition, fifth- and sixth-grade students will develop creative and informative materials to teach younger children about healthy food habits and physical activity. The program will culminate with a parent night where community members can visit the Club to learn about how walking/running and healthy food habits can combat childhood obesity.
  • New Horizons, an Indianapolis Public Schools program, received a $1,000 grant to design and implement the New Horizons Hikers program. The new hiking program begins this week, and will culminate with a presentation during Family Night on April 26.? Students will take pictures of their hikes and create maps of the areas that they hike, while also tracking the number of steps or miles hiked, calories burned, and points of interest along the routes. The Hikers will present their maps and be recognized on Family Night.
  • Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) received a $1,000 grant to implement the Steps Right Up program. More than 500 students and 200 families from six schools or programs will work together to combat childhood obesity and make healthy lifestyle decisions through education, exercise and nutrition.
  • William McKinley School #39 received a $1,000 grant to develop 39 Steppers, a student-led walking group. Student members will design and implement an after-school walking program for the student body and staff and track the total number of miles walked during the program. The 39 Steppers will present their activity and results at the School 39 Family Night on April 26.
  • George H. Miller School #93 received a $1,000 grant to develop the Wildcat Hiking Club. The Hiking Club?s student members will design and implement a program that will focus on lifestyle and obesity awareness as well as actively engage the students in physical exercise. The club will take at least four hikes during the project period to local city and state parks and host a school Family Fitness and Fun Night on April 26.

UnitedHealth Heroes projects will begin on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service (Jan. 21) and end on Global Youth Service Day (April 26-28).

?Once again this year we were amazed by the creative ideas young people came up with to help fight obesity and encourage healthier lifestyles,? said Dan Krajnovich, CEO, UnitedHealthcare Employer & Individual of Indiana. ?By planning, and then participating in the UnitedHealth Heroes program, these youth are working to ?Step into Service,? and give back to their communities, as they positively impact the lives of everyone around them.?

A complete list of grant winners and their projects is available online at www.ysa.org/HEROES.

Tips on Building Relationships with Evaluation Stakeholders, Part 2 ...

?It is one of the most beautiful compensations of this life that no man can sincerely try to help another without helping himself.?
Ralph Waldo Emerson

This post is part 2 in a series of posts dedicated to the committed stakeholders I?ve worked with over the past year, who continue to inspire me to follow their example of helping others. This post continues where we left off from my previous post on tips to build relationships with stakeholders, inspired by lessons learned and a recent fundraising letter I received from my alma mater.

Share a vision

Remain positive and communicate a central idea?a vision that will take your program

onward and upward.?? The fundraising letter gradually built up to this vision: ?everyone deserves

a chance.?? Build relationships and talk to participants and staff to help build a mutual vision

that resonates and revitalizes.

Encourage participation in the evaluation, regardless of amount or type.

Every bit counts.? Key stakeholders can participate in different ways.

Encourage stakeholders to give the gift of time.? Seek new ways to involve them. Invite them to share their responses to evaluation-related drafts such as surveys, evaluation plans and especially evaluation reports.? Offer evaluation-related training to increase your organization?s capacity.? I have found our community partners and volunteers to be incredibly valuable allies in planning evaluations.? They have experienced the needs that the programs address.? They are experts in their own rights.? I am so thankful for their heartfelt advice and the gift of their time.

Time it right.

Isn?t timing everything?? The letter arrived in my mailbox during the holiday season, when some may be more inclined to give.? Consider signs of readiness to participate in evaluation-related ?? activities.? What is the energy level of the group?1 How enthusiastic are people?

Be willing to listen.

The fundraising letter related a firsthand account of a student?s story.? Do your best to hear from program participants directly.? Evaluation offers a more objective and systematic way of collecting this information.? I appreciate the value of gathering evaluation data from interviews and focus groups, that is, qualitative data:? such methods offer a glimpse into participants? lives and can lead to insights that a survey cannot.? This is what I enjoy most about the work I do?getting to know the real people whom we serve.

?Stop, look and listen.?

I?ve been learning recently the need to:

  1. Stop! ?Stop myself??my own preconceived notions, plans and ideas1.
  2. Look! Observe body language and context of people?s comments1.
  3. Listen! Stopping and looking helps me to listen to what is really being said and to what is not being said.

Sharing the stories of people we?ve listened to has the potential to impact program decision-making.

These are 7 ways that a fundraising letter?s message stayed with me.? I hope these seven tips also help us strengthen our relationships with our own evaluation stakeholders.

Many of us desire to give back to our communities in some way.? We desire to reach out and touch the future?to play a part in bringing about tangible outcomes that make the world better place.? Let?s nurture that desire to give in the stakeholders of all our evaluations.

U.S. forces involved in failed hostage rescue

President Obama divulged today that the U.S. military played a role in a botched attempt by French commandos to free a hostage in Somalia on Friday.

In a letter to Congress released this evening the president says service members "provided limited technical support" in the raid - likely referring to intelligence or surveillance assistance - although he denies the forces took direct action in the assault on the compound. The NATO member state was attempting to free a French intelligence agent that had been captured by Islamic militant group al-Shabab three years ago.

The hostage and at least once French soldier died in the ensuing firefight, which also killed a reported 17 militants, according to the French government. A town elder told The Associated Press the commandos had also shot Somalis who had turned on flashlights during the nighttime raid attempting to discern what the commotion was hitting their streets.

Al-Shabab claims the French agent is still in their custody along with a soldier from the raid, but has offered no proof.

In his letter to Congress alerting them to his deployment of U.S. forces, Obama also writes that U.S. aircraft "briefly entered Somali airspace to support the rescue operation, if needed," but did not deploy weapons. The letter does not state whether the aircraft were manned planes or drone vehicles.

The news came as France expands military operations in another African state, sending warplanes into northern Mali to bomb al Qaeda-linked rebels.

A Twitter posting from the office of Mali's president states the United States has agreed to offer logistical support in that country, although American officials have not announced specifics. The Pentagon has reportedly said it is still weighing options in the West African state, which already sees American surveillance drones in its airspace.

ABC's Bazi Kanani contributed to this report.

Reid denies involvement in Utah businessman scheme

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) ? Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's office said Monday he was never involved in a deal to have a Utah businessman pay the senator to make a federal investigation disappear.

St. George businessman Jeremy Johnson, who's accused of running a $350 million software scheme, said a top official in the Utah attorney general's office orchestrated an agreement in 2010 to pay $600,000 to someone connected to Reid.

Johnson told The Salt Lake Tribune over the weekend that he believed Reid would intervene in the Federal Trade Commission's investigation into his business.

A spokeswoman for Reid's office, Kristen Orthman, said Monday that the Nevada Democrat "had no knowledge or involvement" in Johnson's case and said the allegations "are nothing more than innuendo and simply not true."

Federal prosecutors allege that Johnson's company sent software to consumers for a supposedly risk-free trial but billed them anyway.

Johnson was arrested at a Phoenix airport in 2011, carrying more than $26,000 in cash and a one-way plane ticket to Costa Rica.

Prosecutors initially charged him with one count of mail fraud. He was set to enter a guilty plea Friday to two additional charges of bank fraud and money laundering as part of an agreement with the government.

But that deal fell apart after Johnson and prosecutors disagreed over the terms. Johnson instead decided to maintain his not guilty plea and the case is set to go to trial.

On Saturday, the Tribune reported that Johnson provided the newspaper with emails, financial statements, photos and a transcript of a recorded meeting with John Swallow, then the state's chief deputy attorney general.

Only one email from Johnson was available on the newspaper's website.

Swallow was elected as Utah Attorney General in November and was sworn into office last week. He has strongly denied the allegations and maintains he only offered to connect Johnson with a lobbying firm.

After the FTC filed a lawsuit against Johnson and nine business associates in December 2010, Johnson said he asked Swallow to return part of the $250,000 he had paid. Johnson said he doesn't know if anyone connected to Reid received it.

Swallow, a Republican, said he told Johnson he would not interfere with the FTC investigation or advocate for Johnson to the U.S. attorney.

"Any suggestion by Mr. Johnson that I have been involved in illegal or inappropriate activity regarding his FTC case or any other matter is false and defamatory," he said.

Swallow said he connected Johnson to someone who could hire lobbyists but did not participate in any agreement or receive any payment. He said Johnson is trying to divert attention from his own problems.

Utah Democrats have called for an independent investigation to look into the allegations against Swallow.

Swallow's office declined to answer questions Monday and said they would be issuing a statement. Messages left with Reid's office for further comment on Monday weren't immediately returned.

Late Monday afternoon, Swallow's office released a letter asking the U.S. Attorney's Office in Salt Lake City to investigate Johnson's claims.

Swallow said he's confident an investigation will clear his name.

"These lies he's told have been fabricated for some end I cannot imagine. That's what I hope this investigation will show. I'm looking forward to clear my name and show people that this didn't happen," Swallow told The Associated Press Monday evening.

The U.S. Attorney's Office in Salt Lake City has declined comment on whether there is an investigation into the alleged deal.

Before his arrest, Johnson donated generously to charities and to the political campaigns of former Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff. He gave $2,400 to Reid's re-election campaign in July 2010, according to Federal Election Commission records.

Johnson also used his personal helicopters to aid search and rescue efforts in southern Utah and made international headlines in January 2010 when he purchased a plane to fly doctors and other critical supplies to Haiti following a devastating earthquake.

Johnson, 37, could face decades in prison if he's convicted. He is currently free on a $2.8 million bond.

Prosecutors on Friday said they plan to file a new indictment in the case within a month, but wouldn't comment on whether other people besides Johnson would be charged.

A spokeswoman for Johnson's attorneys released a statement Monday afternoon saying Swallow's claims that he was uninvolved and had no knowledge of the agreement are false.

"Johnson stands by his comments, as told to the Salt Lake Tribune, and continues to believe that his understanding of the agreement to be accurate," the statement said.

IRL: Rosetta Stone, PocketWizard and the TomTom Via 1530

Welcome to IRL, an ongoing feature where we talk about the gadgets, apps and toys we're using in real life and take a second look at products that already got the formal review treatment.

Fun fact: this edition of IRL was compiled and timed up about a month ago -- well before we set foot in Vegas to spend a week at CES. We figured, we'd be too busy covering the show, and that we'd be too exhausted afterward to immediately get back to our regularly scheduled workloads. (Ed note: I hope I came out alive -- Dana.) At this point, of course, CES has come and gone, and despite the 18-hour work days, we'd say we had a good time. Nonetheless, we need the literary equivalent of a Tums after a seven-day avalanche of posts, and we suspect you do too. What better, then, but a column about older tech we've lived with a while? We even threw a CD-ROM mention in there for variety's sake.

Ford CEO: Luxury market has room for Lincoln

DEARBORN, Mich. (AP) -- Ford thinks the luxury car market is missing something.

Luxury buyers sobered up during the recession, the company reckons, and they now find German brands to pricey, Cadillac too showy and Japanese brands too boring. Ford hopes its Lincoln brand will fill a hole: premium but moderately-priced, elegant but not ostentatious, sporty but smooth.

"There's a whole market that's not served," Ford CEO Alan Mulally told The Associated Press in a recent interview. "I was just driving a $98,000 (competitor's) car yesterday. A $98,000 car. Well, we're not going after them."

Lincoln is in the midst of a revamp that will see four new models over the next four years. The first, the MKZ midsize sedan, arrived in showrooms in December. It starts at just under $36,000 - a little less than its closest competitor, the Lexus ES - but offers some premium features the Lexus doesn't, like a panoramic glass roof.

Lincoln will give a glimpse of its next product at the Detroit auto show this week. The MKC small SUV is critical, since it will compete in the fastest-growing segment in the luxury industry. Sales of other small luxury SUVs, like the BMW X3 and the Acura RDX, saw big jumps last year as younger buyers entered the market and older buyers traded down from larger SUVs.

The MKC concept hints at what will hit showrooms by the end of this year. It shares the MKZ's panoramic roof and spare, highly sculpted lines. But it has a more dramatic grille thanks to the use of two shades of metal and a trunk that's cut to allow one long, thin, uninterrupted taillight on the rear. There are touches like shiny wood flecked with silver flakes and Lincoln logos stitched into the seats and floor mats.

Ford wants to keep Lincoln in the public eye this year, starting with the brand's first Super Bowl ad. In early spring, Lincoln dealers will start offering date nights to prospective customers, letting them borrow an MKZ and treating them to dinner.

Mulally and Jim Farley, a former top Lexus executive who now leads the Lincoln brand, sat down with The Associated Press recently to talk about Lincoln. Below are excerpts, edited for length:

AP: Lincoln dealers say they love the new vehicles but need them to get to the showrooms more quickly. Do you need to move faster to turn Lincoln around?

Mulally: We are going as fast as we can. I know that sounds maybe too easy, but this is a company that turned the corner and now is growing. We're going up in production, all those new launches and all that product development. And it's a real balance to deliver those vehicles. I think we think we'd like to go faster, but the most important thing is to deliver on this brand promise that we've made.

Farley: I think building a world class premium brand, especially a brand like Lincoln where our vision is to serve all the customers, you have to be very thoughtful about the kind of products, when they come out and how you build in the capability at the dealership level. And that takes time. I remember how anxious everyone was for the (Ford) Fiesta to launch, and we said, "We need a little time to get ready for this launch." Our dealers weren't used to dealing with Honda trade-ins. We didn't know how to sell a small car. We were selling Expeditions and Explorers. They didn't know how to quote used-car prices for a Civic or a Fit. If you want to be truly a luxury brand that competes and differentiates in the U.S. market, with the kind of competition out there and the kind of expectations, customers have, to get the plumbing and the wiring and the software and the people side of the dealership takes time. It takes time for us to consolidate the dealer network. Our team, and Alan, always really made sure that when we did things that we had real proof. The Lincoln dealers, for many decades, were told many things. And this is a team that believes deeply that when we say something, we're going to do it.

Mulally: We helped our reputation and our credibility because of what we did with Ford. We couldn't have done this without Ford. They know that we're serious about it. We know how to do it.

AP: How long will Lincoln's turnaround take? When will you start making a dent in the Germans' dominance of the luxury market?

Farley: We had the benefit of seeing how the luxury industry changed after the recession, because we were imagining and executing all these products right after that. And what we found in the recession was a fundamental reset button on price points, on expectations, on why people buy a luxury car - to treat themselves rather than to show off. We are seeing that play out right now. Like for example, when I was with another brand, more than 25 percent of our sales were with a high-end, rear-wheel-drive sedan. Today, that vehicle's less than 10 percent of their sales. The recession fundamentally changed the sales.

Mulally: It's just a huge change in the number of people who want premium but they want affordable premium. That's the answer to your question, because you've got these guys up here (holds hand up high) and you've got these huge numbers in between.

Farley: And on the time side, we think of it kind of like "Get Smart," where you're walking through all those doors. The first step of the journey requires the transformation of the lineup, all new products, completely differentiated, exclusive drivetrain and exclusive dealership facilities and people who are only selling Lincolns. And until you do those, you really aren't starting the journey to being a really premium player. We are totally focused on that first step. I don't know how many doors - opportunities - we have. Our sights are not to be the biggest, to sell 200,000 to 300,000 units. That's not our goal. Our goal is to take the solid footing we have from Lincoln and now start that march toward a really premium brand.

Mulally: We're not in a hurry. The dealers are in place. We make a reasonable return on the Lincoln vehicles. It's not like anybody's panicking.

AP: Ford recalled the Escape four times after it went on sale for various safety issues. The Lincoln launches will have to be flawless. How do you ensure that?

Mulally: I would say that your comment is absolutely right. It has to be, across Ford and Lincoln. Ford is so excited on one hand. You know how many years these companies have been declining. We've turned that corner. We were the first ones to turn it. We're growing now. The growth is spectacular, here and around the world. So now we're turning the corner, adding production, adding third shifts, second shifts, and last June we weren't able to keep up with the demand. And then we have all these launches, because we made a commitment that we are going to have the best-in-class quality, fuel efficiency and safety. So every time we don't, then we're going to stop just like we did. We'll come pick them up, we'll do whatever it takes. We'll get it right for you right away. I think the most important thing is our commitment to quality. But it's an exhilarating time.

AP: You just changed Lincoln's name to the Lincoln Motor Co. and began a new ad campaign. What impact are you seeing?

Farley: More important to me than how is it affecting demand for Lincoln vehicles is that more and more people are talking about Lincoln. We're getting more online discussion. A lot more people are saying, "Lincoln. What is that? Who are they? What are they doing?" That is good. That was very much part of the initiative of the Lincoln Motor Co. When I talk to Gucci and Burberry, brands that were very big in the `70s and then recommitted themselves, they all said the same thing to me: "Jim, make sure that you start a conversation around Lincoln." And that's part of our expectation for the Super Bowl.

AP: There are a lot of naysayers out there, including GM's CEO Dan Akerson, who have suggested Lincoln has fallen too far to be revived. What do you say to that?

Mulally: I just believe Jim's vision that he laid out, when we decided to focus on Ford and Lincoln, so we had a great volume brand for everybody and a premium brand. And then let each one do the talking. I wouldn't go out and bad mouth things. Let each of them do their thing and tell everybody that this is the brand promise. You can't get in that car (hybrid MKZ) and operate it and get out of it and not go, "Wow. That's a different experience." And there are people - there are a lot of people - who want that experience, they want that innovative technology and they want to access it. They don't want to pay $100,000. And Ford can do that. Ford can really do that.
