2011 GDP: 1.7% - Business Insider

That's the final, pathetic growth number for 2011.

From the just-released GDP report:

Real GDP increased 1.7 percent in 2011 (that is, from the 2010 annual level to the 2011 annual level), compared with an increase of 3.0 percent in 2010.???????

The increase in real GDP in 2011 primarily reflected positive contributions from personal consumption expenditures (PCE), exports, and nonresidential fixed investment that were partly offset by negative contributions from state and local government spending, private inventory investment, and federal government spending.? Imports, which are a subtraction in the calculation of GDP, increased.

Not exactly a barnburner.

Scattered investing, scattered results | Finance Explained

In Alberta, a couple we?ll call Wilt, 36, and his wife, Susan, 44, are thriving with a total take-home income of $ 8,000 a month. Both self-employed as consultants ? he in management, she in health care ? they have come to a point in their lives in which they have a good deal of unencumbered cash flow. Their net worth, about $ 229,000, is modest, but they are planning far ahead. Their goals ? educate their five-year-old daughter and plan a retirement.

Family Finance asked Lenore Davis, a registered financial planner with Dixon, Davis & Co. in Victoria, to work with Wilt and Susan. ?They are scattered in terms of where they deploy their money,? Ms. Davis says. ?They do indeed need a plan to get them to their retirement goal while looking after their daughter?s educational needs.?

Financial management

For now, Susan and Wilt need to reduce their debts and to rationalize their investments. To do that, they have to resist the urge to increase their personal spending parallel to their increased income. Their method has been to run all their income through their personal corporation and pay themselves as needed. Their $ 8,000 monthly draw leaves $ 983 a month unspent. They can use it for their child?s RESP ? $ 2,500 a year, which will attract $ 500 a year from the Canada Educational Savings Grant ? and putting $ 8,000 into lump-sum mortgage reduction on each anniversary due date.

After taking their draws from their corporation and allowing for deductions, there should be $ 60,000 in their company each year to be invested. The money can be left inside the company or flowed out to Wilt and Susan so that they can invest it personally.

Corporate income tax rates ? federal and provincial ? on active Alberta small-business income are low at 14%, compared to personal income tax rates in their bracket of 32% on salaries. But investment income from money left in a corporation is taxed at 45%. So the best thing for now is to distribute the income to the couple as dividends, Ms. Davis advises. In time, they should consider adding to salary to boost Canada Pension Plan benefits, she adds. Dividends are not salary or wage income and do not generate CPP credits.

Any payouts of surplus cash can be used for RESPs, mortgage paydowns, TFSA contributions or filling RRSP space. Wilt has $ 67,000 of unused RRSP space, Susan $ 86,000 of space.

Retirement planning

In 29 years, when they are ready to retire, if they have built up CPP benefits at the maximum rate, currently $ 11,840 a year, they can add their entitlement to full Old Age Security benefits, currently $ 6,480 a year, to build a base of public pensions of $ 36,640 a year in 2012 dollars. Their present spending net of school tuition, saving and debt repayment, about $ 4,000 a month, or $ 48,000 a year after tax, would be approximately $ 74,000 before 35% average tax.

To achieve that level of income, they would have to add $ 37,360 of annual investment income. At 65, when Wilt and Susan begin their retirement, they would need capital of $ 622,700. That would produce the required annual supplement to public pensions, assuming all their income and capital would be used up by the time Wilt is 90. To get to that level of capital, they will have to save $ 11,220 a year for the next 29 years and achieve a 3.0% real rate of return.

The couple already saves more than $ 14,000 a year in RRSPs and taxable savings, so reaching the target should be no problem. Yet Wilt and Susan have shown a knack for investing in risky undertakings with sad outcomes. For example, they have $ 100,000 in a real-estate venture that has gone into receivership. The couple needs to switch investment methods from the concept of adventure to a steady system for diversifying assets and estimating dependable returns from stocks, bonds and perhaps real-estate mutual funds or exchange-traded funds that have strong and rising payouts. Their allocation to bonds should grow to perhaps 25% of total investments within the next few years and rise to 65% by retirement age, Ms. Davis suggests.

Investing in security

The final issue in Wilt and Susan?s future is their view of the purpose of investments. When they had little money, they invested for the thrill of it. Now that they have substantial incomes and substantial assets, they must act like good managers for themselves and for their child.

To avoid the risk of buying the wrong stock or bond, commodity or parcel of real estate, the couple can use low-fee exchange-traded funds with diversified assets. Over a period of 29 years, ETF fees that would average about 0.50% a year will tend to outperform actively managed mutual funds with fees five times higher. The 2.0% annual saving will translate into a 58% value retention over 29 years. Competent managers of higher-fee mutual funds could boost returns and justify their fees, but the odds of finding mangers who can beat the market for nearly three decades are poor.

Wilt and Susan could increase their financial security by purchasing disability insurance. Disability coverage prices vary widely. For payments of $ 5,000 a person a month that begin 90 days after a reported injury or illness, Wilt would pay $ 125 a month to age 65 and Susan would pay $ 243 a month to age 65. The premiums could be paid by their company as a taxable benefit to the employees.

?This couple is in a great place to make their financial situation secure,? Ms. Davis says. ?By taking concrete money-management measures, they can stop worrying about past losses and focus on a comfortable future lifestyle and a solid retirement plan. A relatively small amount of planning and a move to a sound investment style with reasonable costs should get them to a comfortable retirement.?

Stocks move lower after new growth figures

By msnbc.com news services

Stocks moved lower Friday after data showed gross domestic product for the fourth quarter was slightly below Wall Street expectations.

Investors were also looking ahead to an anticipated an imminent conclusion to Greek debt talks.

EU Economic and Monetary Affairs Commissioner Olli Rehn said talks with private creditors on restructuring Greek debt are "very close" to closing. Athens needs a deal to secure further international aid and so avert a disorderly default when a major bond redemption falls due in March.

In earnings news, Ford reported a lower-than-expected fourth-quarter profit due to higher commodity costs and losses in its automotive operations in Europe and Asia.

New U.N. showdown with Russia over Syria looms (Reuters)

DAMASCUS (Reuters) ? Britain and France joined forces with Arab allies on Wednesday to push the U.N. Security Council to back an Arab League call for Syrian President , Bashar al-Assad to step aside, setting the stage for a showdown with Syria's ally Russia.

"The U.N. Security Council must support the Arab League's courageous decisions which are trying to end the repression and violence in Syria and find a solution to the political crisis," French Foreign Ministry spokesman Bernard Valero said.

The Security Council could vote as early as next week on a new draft resolution, which delegates from Britain and France are crafting in consultation with Qatar, Morocco, the United States, Germany and Portugalenvoys said. The new resolution replaces a Russian draft Western diplomats said was too weak.

U.S. President Barack Obama said in his State of the Union address on Tuesday that Assad would "soon discover that the forces of change can't be reversed."

It remains unclear whether Russia - which together with China vetoed a European-drafted resolution in October that condemned Syria and threatened it with sanctions over its 10-month crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrators - is prepared to once again to block council action on Syria.

"We hope Russia won't use its veto against the Arab League, which is what it would be this time," a U.N. envoy said. "They'll put up a fight. There will be negotiations. We'll see."

Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said his country remained opposed to sanctions on Syria and reiterated its opposition to military intervention. But the Western-Arab draft, obtained by Reuters, calls for neither military action nor sanctions, but for the council to support the Arab League.

'TERRORISTS'

The head of the Syrian Arab Red Crescent in the northern town of Idlib was shot and killed on Wednesday, the International Committee of the Red Cross said, in an attack which Damascus blamed on "terrorists."

State news agency SANA also said a priest was killed by "terrorists" while helping a wounded person in the city of Hama.

The government says it is fighting foreign-backed Islamist "terrorists" who have killed 2,000 soldiers and police. SANA said 30 more were buried in the last two days.

The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said seven other people were killed on Wednesday. One was killed by soldiers surrounding the Bab Qabli district of Hama and a woman died after a shell landed on her house near the town of Qusair, 10 km (6 miles) from the Lebanese border, it said.

It also reported clashes between army deserters and state soldiers in the rebellious province of Idlib that disabled three armored vehicles and killed or wounded six soldiers.

The revolt in Syria was inspired by other uprisings that have toppled three autocratic Arab leaders over the past year and the bloodletting has battered Assad's standing in the world.

The Arab League has suspended Syria's membership.

Russia, one of Syria's few allies, continues to sell weapons to Damascus, which European and U.S. officials have criticized. Iran, at loggerheads with Western powers over its disputed nuclear ambitions, is also a strong ally of Assad.

GULF ARAB MONITORS LEAVE SYRIA

More than 50 Arab League observers from Gulf Arab states left Syria on Wednesday after their governments said they were certain "the bloodshed and killing of innocents would continue."

Their colleagues in Damascus, about 120 strong, pledged to continue the monitoring mission, now extended until February 23, to verify Syria's compliance with an earlier Arab peace plan.

"The departure of the GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) countries will not have an impact on the mission's work. We are all professionals here and we can do the job," said a senior Arab monitor, who asked not to be named.

"We need more monitors of course and more will come soon to replace those who left," the monitor said.

Syrian opposition groups have accused the observer mission, which began on December 26, of giving Assad diplomatic cover to pursue a crackdown on protesters and rebels in which more than 5,000 people have been killed since March, by a U.N. tally.

Arab League chief Nabil Elaraby and Qatari Prime Minister Hamad bin Jassim al-Thani, who heads the League's committee on Syria, wrote jointly to U.N. chief Ban, setting out their plan for a political solution in Syria and requesting a chance to brief the Security Council soon.

British Ambassador Mark Lyall Grant told reporters in New York that the Arab League briefing could take place as early as Monday. Council diplomats said a vote on the new draft resolution could follow shortly thereafter.

The new draft resolution says the Security Council "supports ... the League of Arab States' initiative ... to facilitate a political transition leading to a democratic, plural political system ... including through the transfer of power from the President and transparent and free elections."

It falls short of making compliance with the Arab plan legally binding. But it does ask U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to report to the council every 15 days on Syria's compliance with the resolution, which would formally put it on the Security Council's agenda.

Russia has repeatedly said it does not want Syria to become another Libya, where Moscow contends that NATO misused a Security Council mandate to protect civilians as a vehicle for "regime change."

But Western diplomats said that Russia might find it difficult to use its veto against a resolution that is simply intended to provide support for the Arab League initiative.

Trial opens for last officer in Katrina shootings (AP)

NEW ORLEANS ? Jury selection is under way in the trial of a retired New Orleans police sergeant charged with helping cover up deadly shootings of unarmed residents on a New Orleans bridge after Hurricane Katrina.

The trial starting Monday for Gerard Dugue is expected to last two weeks.

Dugue allegedly submitted a false report to make it appear police were justified in shooting six people, killing two less than a week after the 2005 storm.

U.S. District Judge Kurt Engelhardt ordered separate trials for Dugue and five other current or former officers who were convicted in August of civil rights violations stemming from the shootings.

Dugue isn't charged in the shooting. He didn't get involved in the case until several weeks later, when the department assigned him to help another sergeant investigate.

Republicans point toward 1st of 2 SC debates (AP)

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. ? The Republican presidential contenders on Monday campaigned their way into the first of two debates before a pivotal weekend primary in South Carolina, with Mitt Romney savoring an endorsement from the latest campaign dropout and his pursuers struggling to emerge as the race's principal conservative.

Hours before the debate, former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman withdrew from the race and announced his support for Romney despite their differences. He appealed to all remaining contenders to stop attacking one another.

There appeared little likelihood of that happening, either in the TV commercials, mail and other advertising blanketing the state ahead of Saturday's vote or, possibly, on the debate stage itself.

Romney wasn't present for Huntsman's endorsement, and Newt Gingrich, Rick Santorum, Rick Perry and Ron Paul all but ignored it as they sought to slow the front-runner's momentum in the race to pick a Republican rival to President Barack Obama this fall.

Romney has victories in the only two contests of the campaign thus far, the Iowa caucuses and New Hampshire primary earlier this month. Gingrich has conceded that the former Massachusetts governor will likely be the party's nominee if he is similarly victorious in South Carolina, an assertion that none of the others in the race has so far contested.

That raised the significance of the night's debate, as well as another one scheduled for Thursday in Charleston.

Romney is the leader in the public opinion polls in South Carolina, although his rivals hope the state's high, 9.9 percent unemployment rate and the presence of large numbers of socially conservative evangelical voters will allow one of them to slip by him.

Huntsman was the second campaign dropout to endorse Romney, after former Minnesota Gov. Tom Pawlenty. Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, who quit after a last-place finish in Iowa, has not yet said which of the remaining contenders she supports. Herman Cain, who left the race in December after facing allegations of sexual impropriety, has promised an endorsement soon.

Huntsman's parting announcement included a reference to the differences he and Romney had. But he left the podium without responding to questions about his remark last week, in the run-up to the New Hampshire primary, that Romney was unelectable and out of touch.

It was unclear why Romney did not attend the announcement. He was in town for a later campaign appearance and then the debate.

Gingrich and Perry both began their day at a Martin Luther King Jr. Day observance, where they praised the legacy of the slain civil right legacy.

At about the same time, Santorum was complaining that attacks launched against him by a political action committee supporting Romney was spreading lies. He called on Romney to ask the group to edit or remove its ads from the air.

The attack on Santorum is patterned after one that helped send Gingrich into a nosedive in the polls in the final weeks of the Iowa caucus campaign.

Gingrich made similar demands on Romney to rein in his supporters, but was ignored.

Paul, who generally keeps a light campaign schedule, addressed the Faith and Freedom Coalition forum in the afternoon. The Texas congressman cast his libertarian message in religious terms, noting the Bible speaks up for private property ownership and sound currency.

Jon Huntsman's Mandarin moments (Politico)

There he goes again: on Wednesday night, Jon Huntsman rolled out the Mandarin in a South Carolina town hall meeting.

For Huntsman, who learned the Chinese dialect as a Mormon missionary in Taiwan, it wasn?t a big deal. He?s frequently spoken in Chinese at events over the course of his campaign ? often in response to Chinese speakers who approach him.

But after a nationally televised debate last week in which he displayed his bilingual skills to mixed reviews, and in a party where China has been a source of considerable economic and foreign policy anxiety, Huntsman?s habit is drawing attention ? and not necessarily the good kind.

?I didn?t think the Mandarin thing worked at all. I thought it was ridiculous,? said Donald Trump, a harsh critic of China, on Fox News. ?And frankly, I think Huntsman?s stance toward China is ? it?s almost like he?s an Obama plant.?

Joe Scarborough, the former GOP congressman and host of MSNBC?s ?Morning Joe,? also had a negative reaction: ?You don?t speak Mandarin during a Republican debate.?

It?s not the first time Huntsman?s been whacked for his being bilingual. In the week prior to the Jan. 7 debate ? when he responded to Mitt Romney?s criticism of his China policies by saying in Mandarin Chinese, ?He doesn?t totally understand this situation? ? Huntsman was the target of a racially charged web ad that called him ?China Jon? and the ?Manchurian candidate.? The ad, created by someone claiming to be a Ron Paul supporter, questioned whether he had ?American values or Chinese? and featured clips of the former ambassador to China speaking Mandarin.

Huntsman?s supporters tend to applaud his language proficiency, viewing it as precisely the kind of skill you?d want in a president. They see it as an example of his intellectual dexterity and curiosity, more evidence of the former diplomat?s global perspective.

In some ways, though, that?s exactly the problem. American voters don?t always view a background in foreign affairs, or the ability to speak another language, as an asset in a candidate. Newt Gingrich, for example, is currently airing a web ad mocking Romney for being able to speak French, ?just like John Kerry.? The one minute spot also derisively features a clip of Romney saying, ?Hello, my name is Mitt Romney? in French. The ad?s title? The French Connection.

In Huntsman?s case, it?s not just the television talking heads who found his use of Chinese in the debate politically tone-deaf ? and perhaps even a bit contrived.

Jim Rubens, of Etna, N.H., a supporter who showed up Monday morning at a Huntsman event, said he participated in a Fox News debate focus group where the Mandarin moment was the topic of much discussion.

?They played the clip several times, and I was watching the audience react to it. The Chinese was off-putting for some folks. During the Chinese, the dials just shut down,? he said.

Two days later, Huntsman?s foreign language flight remained a much buzzed about topic with Rubens and the others waiting for the former Utah governor at a 24-hour restaurant in Lebanon, N.H.

Hands-On With The Sony Ericsson Xperia S From CES

I've never been a huge fan of Sony Ericsson. The phones are fine, I guess, and I certainly commend the company's drive to differentiate. The Xperia Play is a great concept but it failed to really take off. Today, however, I was very impressed after taking a good hard look at the new Xperia S. It's not the thinnest phone at .4 inches, nor does it have the biggest screen, but it is something fresh which is more than I can say for most Android Gingerbread phones.

Scottish politicians fend off accusations of being 'anti-Scottish'

The long-simmering debate on Scottish independence has boiled over in Edinburgh, with one politician accusing colleagues of being 'anti-Scottish' for not supporting independence.?

Fierce debate surrounding an upcoming referendum on Scottish independence took an ugly turn when a Scottish nationalist politician labeled the parliamentary members who oppose independence "anti-Scottish," claiming they had formed a political alliance to "defy the will of the Scottish people."

Joan McAlpine's remarks sparked an angry response in the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh, which passed a motion 67-56 stating that the Scottish legislature is responsible for making arrangements for the controversial referendum on the country's independence from the United Kingdom.?(For a full explanation of the independence referendum issue, see our earlier story.)

"I absolutely make no apology for saying that the Liberals, the Labour Party and the Tories are anti-Scottish in coming together to defy the will of the Scottish people, the democratic mandate the Scottish people gave us to hold the referendum at a time of our choosing, which the first minister said would be the latter half of the parliament," Ms. McAlpine told the Scottish Parliament.

Their opposition to independence is the only policy that the three main unionist parties ? the Conservative, Labour and Liberal Democrats parties ? can be sure to be in more or less total agreement. Though the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats share power in the UK coalition government in London, it is an alliance of political convenience and their politics diverge greatly.

Scotland's First Minister Alex Salmond derided the parties' decision to join forces on the independence issue as an unholy alliance between Conservative Prime Minister David Cameron and opposition Labour Party leader Ed Miliband (who are otherwise political foes), formed merely to dismiss calls for independence. A Labour member of the Scottish parliament, Neil Findlay, led the unionist retort, calling McAlpine's outburst an "utter disgrace."

"I think the member should seriously consider what she is saying. Given the views that opinion polls suggest of the vast majority of the Scottish people, is she suggesting that they're not patriotic and do not love their country?" he said.

As the Monitor reported earlier this week, the most recent polls indicate that only 38 percent of Scots support outright independence.?Another released Thursday suggested support was as low as 33 percent.

Conservative Scottish parliament member Jackson Carlaw, calling himself "a proud Scot and an elected member of the chamber," accused Ms. McAlpine of "political racism."

Salmond, who appeared to be trying to distance himself from the argument, reiterated the Scottish government's stance that the referendum should be "organized in Scotland, built in Scotland for the Scottish people, discussed with civic Scotland, and brought to the people in 2014 for a historic decision on the future of this nation."

On Friday, he invited Mr. Cameron and his deputy Nick Clegg to Edinburgh for "constructive dialogue" about the the issue. Cameron's UK government prefers a vote "sooner rather than later," possibly within the next 18 months, and disputes Edinburgh's constitutional right to hold a legally-binding referendum without new powers being devolved by London. The British government's perceived interference in what Scots consider a domestic issue is what touched off this week's spat.

Although Ms. McAlpine later tried to tone down her comments by saying they were directed only at the Conservative, Labour and Liberal Dem leaderships, her clarification came with a stinging addendum. The unionist parties, she said, "should not be ganging up" in what would seem to be an alliance "against Scotland's democratic right to decide our own future."

Egypt's radical Salafis approach secular rivals (AP)

CAIRO ? Egypt's ultraconservative Islamist party has reached out to rival secular and liberal political factions in an unusual, behind-the-scenes attempt to unify their ranks and counter the Muslim Brotherhood's power in the country's new parliament.

An alliance between the Salafis and nonreligious parties would be very difficult to reach and even harder to maintain, given the large differences in their ideologies. But the talks highlight the growing worries that the Brotherhood, fresh off its election victory, is starting to throw its weight around to dominate Egypt's politics and sideline others.

The talks, which took place over the past week, also show the strange bedfellows that can be brought together with Egypt's politics deeply in flux ahead of the convening later this month of the first parliament since the Feb. 11 fall of ousted President Hosni Mubarak.

As a consequence, parliament may not be controlled by a unified Islamist front, but a divided one making choices on political considerations not purely religious ones. The Brotherhood and the Salafis are both Islamist movements, but there have been frequent frictions between them during the election campaign.

The Salafi talks with liberals are startling because the movement is considerably more conservative than the Brotherhood and more aggressive in its vilification of secularism. Salafis call for a strict, literalist implementation of Islamic Shariah law in Egypt and practice a Saudi-style segregation of the sexes. During the election campaign, some Salafi sheikhs railed against secular parties, telling Egyptians that voting for them would be un-Islamic.

With Egypt's multistage parliament elections almost finished, the Brotherhood is on track to win just under 50 percent of the legislature's seats. The alliance led by the main Salafi party, Al-Nour, holds about 20 percent, while multiple liberal, leftist, secular parties along with independents and remnants of Mubarak's regime make up most of the rest.

Talks between the Al-Nour Party and the two main liberal groups, the Free Egyptians and the Wafd Party, came in response to fears the Brotherhood is moving to monopolize key legislative positions including the parliament president, deputies and heads of its 19 committees, said Essam Sultan, a leading member of the Al-Wasat Party, which hosted the talks.

Parliament is also supposed to also create a 100-member panel to write Egypt's new constitution. In an interview with the Al-Ahram daily, senior Brotherhood official Ahmed Abu Baraka laid out what he called the group's vision for the panel's makeup ? raising alarm that the Brotherhood was seeking to run the process. The group's leadership quickly distanced itself, saying Abu Baraka was expressing his personal viewpoint.

Such unilateral moves by the Brotherhood, ahead of the scheduled convening of parliament on Jan. 23, put other parties "under heavy pressure," said Sultan. "The minute I proposed these meetings, everybody agreed to come."

The head of the Salafi Al-Nour, Emad Abdel-Ghafour, confirmed the meetings but declined to comment on the possibility of striking alliances. "We look for wide national reconciliation because its not possible anymore to isolate any political faction or to run parliament through 50+1 majority," he said.

During the talks, Al-Nour leaders sat at the table with unveiled female members of the Wafd Party, Sultan noted. He also said they engaged in "very successful talks" with the Free Egyptians party, whose founder is Christian Egyptian tycoon Naguib Sawiris. Sawiris is on trial on charges of showing contempt for religion after a Salafi party official complained over a tweet in which he posted a cartoon depicting Mickey Mouse with the beard of an Islamic conservative and Minnie Mouse in a black Islamic veil.

Sultan said that over four days, the parties agreed on general principle that parliament must not be run by a single party, distribution of positions should be based on the proportional weight of each party and parties with small representation should not be neglected.

They also talked about "what brings them together not what separates them apart. The priorities should be on laws related to health services, education, security and improve quality of life," he said.

"We want an end of dictatorship. We don't want to reinvent the old regime through a new dominant ruling party," Sultan said in an oblique reference to the Brotherhood.

He said the liberal parties also aired their concerns over the Salafis' view of civil rights. Christian Wafd member Margaret Azer "talked to them (the Salafis) about all her worries, and they responded to everything," he said. "It was very positive meeting."

Some liberals fear the Brotherhood and Salafis could join forces in parliament to push through a heavily Islamic agenda. But there is also considerable distrust between the two groups. Brotherhood leaders say they do not want to lead alone and want a broad participation.

Mahmoud Ezzat, a prominent Brotherhood figure, commented on the Salafi-liberal meetings, saying, "Everybody is free to do what they want."

He dismissed the possibility of a Brotherhood-Salafi alliance with unusually harsh comments on the Salafis. He described them as a movement with a wide spectrum that includes "remnants of the former regime and horrible personalities along with the moderate Islamists."

"Some of those who ran under the Salafi parties, when you look at their CV, they have nothing to do with Salafis and now they are lawmakers," he said. "There are sane people ... but there are the fanatics."

The Muslim Brotherhood has been involved in politics since its foundation years in 1928, and even though it was banned under Mubarak's regime its candidates ran as independents in parliamentary elections. The Salafis' first political experience came only after Mubarak's fall when the movement formed at least four parties, chief among them Al-Nour. Early in the election campaign, the two tried to form an alliance to run on the same candidate lists, but the Salafis broke away, complaining that the Brotherhood was trying to dominate the partnership.

The Muslim Brotherhood and Salafis share an ideological background that views Islam as not only a faith but school of governance. But their priorities differ, and the Brotherhood is seen as more pragmatic.

At the same time, the Salafis deeply oppose secular parties. Some Salafis used mosques to rally voters, some of them branding rivals as "infidels", and warning voters not to back the Egyptian Bloc, an election coalition led by the Free Egyptians Party, because it was backed by the Coptic Orthodox Church.

Sultan said it is too early for the talks to turn to a political alliance.

"I call this coordination, not alliance yet, since nobody signed anything yet," he said, and added, "It is not about getting how to divide the cake of parliament among us but we hope to revive the national unity that was in Tahrir Square during the revolution."

Harrisburg, Pennsylvania mayor vetoes budget (Reuters)

HARRISBURG, Pennsylvania (Reuters) ? The mayor of Pennsylvania's debt-laden capital of Harrisburg on Monday vetoed the budget passed by the city council in December, calling its provisions "politically motivated."

The $54 million budget passed by the city council eliminated 10 vacant positions plus the jobs of the mayor's communications director and ombudsman. It also raised the council's line item while decreasing the mayor's allotted tax dollars.

The 2012 budget the city council adopted is $1.9 million less than what Mayor Linda Thompson proposed in November and contains the same tax increases. At the time Thompson called the council's actions "spiteful."

With Thompson's veto, the city could operate under the terms of its 2011 budget until both parties agree on a new spending plan decided by state courts and the appointed receiver. The council could override the veto, however, given its original 4-1 vote to pass the budget.

Harrisburg is in a $317 million hole due largely to the expensive repairs and upgrading of its trash incinerator. The city council filed for bankruptcy protection, but the case was dismissed by a federal judge, paving the way for a state takeover of city finances.

Regarding the council's budget adopted 10 days ago, Thompson said, "These are irresponsible, reckless, unacceptable cuts."

Nikon D4 Ethernet tethered shooting hands-on (video)

After getting our eager mitts on Nikon's long overdue D3 successor, aptly named the D4, we got a second chance to revisit our fat-bodied, photo-taking friend at the company's CES booth. The 16.2MP DSLR features a 3.2-inch LCD screen and is capable of 1080p video capture at 30fps. But that's not why we went back for more and it's not why you're reading this right now. We were keen to put the D4's big, bad networking capabilities to the test -- one of which links an array of up to ten of the cameras together for simultaneous, remote shooting over WiFi. Unfortunately, this feature requires use of the TW-5A wireless dongle, which is still awaiting FCC certification and could not be demonstrated. Neither could the imaging company show off the one-to-one connection that allows an auxiliary camera to be controlled from a primary unit. We did get to briefly interact with the camera's native web server running on a laptop, from which you can snap shots, toggle settings (like ISO and shutter speed), playback and download your recordings. You can catch a peek of the interface and an extra look at this sought after shooter after the break.

National Debt Now as Big as Entire Economy

Liberal bloggers pretty happy about it, too

(NEWSER) - Newt Gingrich certainly isn?t mourning the super committee?s super failure , calling it ?good for America? this morning, Politico reports. Gingrich, a longtime critic of the panel, said the ?gridlock? in Washington is ?partly the president's fault, it's partly the Congress' fault, but it's a mess.? The former House speaker adds that he was able to push through balanced budget and welfare reform legislation in the 1990s even with a Democratic president. More?

Angry Birds, Facebook most downloaded apps in 2011 (Reuters)

TORONTO (Reuters) ? Angry Birds and Facebook were the most downloaded iPhone apps of 2011, according to Apple, but some less predictable apps also made their lists.

Craig Palli, a vice president at Fiksu, a marketing company for app developers, explained that this year's top apps incorporate three main trends: the ability to connect with friends, discovery and games that let users past the time and pick up where they left off.

The top app in the social networking category was Facebook. But Palli said the trend of connecting with friends extends further.

"It also encompasses Skype, all the free texting apps and even Bump. These are all apps that lend themselves to enriching our lives through an easier and greater amount of communication and connections with friends," Palli explained.

In the music category, Pandora, which generates personalized radio stations for its users based on their music preferences, was the top app.

"Pandora is such a good app that they don't really need to spend money in marketing. They just get user after user because it's such a compelling experience," Palli said.

TuneIn Radio Pro, which provides access to over 50,000 local and global stations, was another popular music app.

In the games category, Words with Friends, a multi-player game, and Angry Birds were the most downloaded apps. Games captured nine of the top ten spots on the paid apps list.

"They fill those five minutes of time that we were otherwise waiting for a train or appointment," explained Palli.

He added that phones are beginning to replace cameras, which explains the success of apps in the photo and video category.

"First it was the Polaroid camera, then it was the in-the-pocket digital camera. It's now just your phone."

Instagram, also named Apple's iPhone app of the year, topped the camera category. It allows users to take photos, add filters and share them with friends. Camera+, which extends the iPhone's camera with features like zoom, also made the list.

In the health and fitness category, Calorie Counter & Diet Tracker and Nike+ GPS, an app for tracking runs and workouts, were winners. But Palli said the category has fewer downloads than others.

"The volume of downloads that occur in this category is less than one tenth of the other categories," he said, but he predicts that this category will grow in 2012 as people become more health-conscious and apps "augment the actual device itself with something physical."

Groupon, the daily deal service, and Pimp Your Screen, which lets users customize their device with backgrounds and other visual features, were the top apps in the lifestyle category.

Netflix, the video streaming service, was the top app in the entertainment category, along with FatBooth, which lets users visualize how they might look with a few extra pounds.

Palli said free apps generally receive more downloads, and many more developers are starting to offer free versions.

"During 2011, we saw a big shift in strategy from a lot of paid app developers, which was to migrate from a straight paid app experience where you pay for the app up front to an in-app purchase or upgrade experience," he explained.

"This way it's really compelling for the consumer because you can get started with the app and when they experience how good the app is, they can take the wallet out of their pocket and make the extra two taps to get the full features."

3 Ultra-Orthodox Arrested In Suspected Pedophilia Ring In Israel

JERUSALEM -- Israeli police say three men have been arrested in a suspected pedophilia ring thought to have preyed on dozens of Jerusalem children.

Police spokesman Shmuel Ben-Ruby says the ring is suspected of molesting 70 children between the ages of 2 and 7 in their religious Jewish neighborhood.

In all, six men have been arrested, including three on Sunday. Ben-Ruby says it's not clear whether more suspects and children are involved because the investigation is not finished.

Officials familiar with the investigation said parents tried to solve the problem themselves and took months to involve police.

But Yitzhak Kadman, a children's rights advocate, says ultra-Orthodox Jews are slowly beginning to seek authorities' help instead of trying to ignore or whitewash problems inside their cloistered community.

Strikeforce postfight: ?King Mo? rips Mousasi, Rockhold still irked, Cormier?s future and Columbus in March is official

LAS VEGAS - The Strikeforce postfight presser was unlike any we've seen in recent memory. The wins either came too easy or Scott Coker needs to bring in some new challenges.

Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal, Luke Rockhold and Tyron Woodley all sounded bored and uninterested about their future with the promotion. That's bizarre, since one of them has successfully defended his title just one time and the other two are without titles.

Lawal hammered on Gegard Mousasi, his possible challenger for the vacant 205-pound title. He was also asked about a crossover fight with UFC and PRIDE legend Quinton "Rampage" Jackson. King Mo responded by calling him a bum, washed up and a B-level actor.

At least King Mo got his dander up a bit. Rockhold couldn't get past the fact that he fought a guy in Jardine, who'd never fought for the promotion before, or down at middleweight.

"He was pretty tough. He was stronger than I thought he'd be in the clinch. I thought I could dominate a little more in the clinch," shrugged Rockhold. "It was somewhat of a test. A lot of guys couldn't finish him and I told you guys I was going to do what nobody else had done."

Rockhold also gave a half-hearted endorsement of Tim Kennedy being a worthy opponent suggesting he wasn't a very good stand-up fighter.

- Coker seemed to the suggest that the Strikeforce to UFC crossovers will no longer happen.

"The crossovers happened when there was a gray area over whether the Showtime contract was going to be renewed," Coker said. "Now that that's out of the way we're committed to building this league. We're going to continue to do that. That means bringing great fighters here. I think that's what you're going to see all year."

- Woodley vehemently defended his winning fight approach. A media member asked the welterweight contender why he was "reluctant" to stand with Jordan Mein.?

"When you coming forward especially with that kind of range you just don't want to engage in crazy combinations. So when he got within my range, I thought I did what I needed to do, take him down, ground and pound him," Woodley said. "I got the Compustrike [numbers] in my pocket if you want to check it out. I don't think I was reluctant to strike with him."

- Lawal and Rockhold, training partners at AKA, have quickly become pals. King Mo warned that if they're fighting on the same card again in the future, it's an automatic two wins. King Mo threw out nicknames like "Cookies and Cream" or "Domino."

- Strikeforce announced it'll be returning on Mar. 3 in Columbus, Oh. Four fights are officially booked for the Nationwide Arena. Ronda Rousey will challenge Miesha Tate for her 135-pound women's title. KJ Noons will battle Josh Thomson while Paul Daley faces Kazuo Misaki. Sarah Kaufman, another 135-pound contender will face Alexis Davis.

- Coker said the female title fight will not be the main event. The hope was that Strikeforce could finish off its heavyweight Grand Prix that night. Coker didn't sound optimistic about Daniel Cormier's broken hand being ready in time.

"We're waiting to see what happens with DC's hand. We can only wait a couple more days and then we have to make a move one way or the other," Coker said. "I saw an X-ray. And from I what I saw in the X-ray, it's definitely starting to heal, but? will he be ready by March 3rd? I'm not sure. I'm not a doctor. The fighter, once they hit something, they're going to know."

Coker stressed the point that he'd like to get the tournament finished now that it looks like it's going to extend beyond 12 months.

- Some in the media were surprised that Daley was still fighting under Zuffa management. Coker simply said sometimes fighters lose their cool in the heat of the moment, referencing the sucker punch that Daley landed on Josh Koscheck at UFC 113.

"Fighters become emotional sometimes and they say things. You know what? To me, this is a business. I think he's still under contract and they offered him to fight Misaki," Coker said. "You know fighters are emotional. Sometimes promoters are emotional and they come out and say some things they don't mean."

Daley was cut by Dana White, who said he'd never fight for the UFC again.

- Coker was asked about what's next for his lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez. He'd like to see Melendez face Thomson for a third time.

"They should have a trilogy fight. Josh is a tough guy. Gilbert, to me, is the best fighter in the world in the lightweight division and he's gonna fight for Strikeforce," said Coker.

Thomson won the first meeting back in 2008 and Melendez took the second fight in 2009 via five-round unanimous decision.

Thomson didn't fight in 2011. His last bout in Dec. of 2010 resulted in a loss to Tatsuya Kawajiri. Kawajiri followed that win with a lopsided loss to Melendez. He's since dropped to 145 pounds where's he won two straight.

Nigerian president pleads with public ahead of strike

President Goodluck Jonathan pleaded with Nigerians Saturday to support the removal of fuel subsidies and pledged to cut government salaries, in an effort to prevent a nationwide strike planned for Monday.

Nigeria's fuel regulator announced on January 1 the end of the subsidy as part of efforts to cut government spending and weed out corruption in the downstream oil industry, which it hopes will encourage more foreign investment in local refining.

Petrol prices have more than doubled to around 150 naira ($0.93) per liter and protests have erupted across the nation.

Trade unions have said they will begin an indefinite general strike from Monday, including workers in Africa's largest energy sector. Industry sources do not expect strikes to significantly affect crude exports.

"If I were in your shoes at this moment, I probably would have reacted in the same manner as some of our compatriots, or hold the same critical views about government," Jonathan said in a statement, his first official comment on subsidies since the policy was announced.

Like us on Facebook

"The deregulation of the petroleum sector is a necessary step that we had to take. I want to assure every Nigerian that whatever pain you may feel at the moment will be temporary."

Nigeria produces more than 2 million barrels per day of crude oil but almost all of this is shipped to the United States, Europe and Asia. Nigeria has to import its refined fuel, like petrol and diesel, because decades of mismanagement and corruption mean its refineries are in disrepair.

Economists say the subsidy encouraged corruption and waste and handed over billions of dollars of government cash to a cartel of wealthy fuel importers.

The government estimates it will save 1 trillion naira (4.03 billion pounds) this year by eliminating it.

CORRUPTION

Most people in Nigeria live on less than $2 a day and view cheap fuel as the only benefit they get from living in an oil-rich state. Critics say wealthy politicians should have found savings within government and tackled oil industry corruption before imposing costs on the public.

Jonathan said he understood the problems of corruption and the high cost of government, which were being addressed.

"We are all greatly concerned about the issue of corruption. The deregulation policy is the strongest measure to tackle this challenge in the downstream sector."

"To save Nigeria, we must all be prepared to make sacrifices. On the part of government, we are taking several measures aimed at cutting the size and cost of governance."

He said this year the basic salaries of all politicians in the executive arm of government would be reduced by 25 percent. This does not include members of parliament, whose salaries make up a large portion of government spending.

Jonathan said all overseas travel by politicians would be reduced to the bare minimum and the size of delegations on foreign trips would be cut. He also said overlapping committees and departments would be looked at to reduce costs.

Jonathan's critics say he is guilty of wasting money on committees and dozens of special advisers.

He is also under fire for failing to rein in almost daily attacks by an Islamist sect in the northeast of Nigeria.

Many Christians have begun to flee northern Nigeria after dozens were killed in a series of religious attacks in recent days.

Big Three report booming sales for 2011 as Americans unload old cars

Chrysler's sales jump 26 percent over 2010, as smaller and more fuel friendly models give the Big Three US automakers a boost. Also driving sales, pent-up demand from owners of aging cars.

Smaller and more fuel-friendly vehicles are credited with boosting the year-end sales of US automakers. In data released Wednesday, each of Detroit?s Big Three ? General Motors, Ford Motor Co., and Chrysler Group ? enjoyed double-digit sales growth for 2011.

The greatest success story is Chrysler, which reported the highest rate of growth among the domestic competition. Unit sales for cars and trucks jumped 26 percent over 2010, resulting in 1.4 million vehicles sold in the US alone.

Chrysler, the No. 3 US manufacturer, reported the gains just two years after it filed for bankruptcy.

Michelle Krebs, a senior analyst with Edmunds.com, says the turnaround can be traced to the company?s famous Super Bowl ad last year, which became a viral hit online and ended up winning the 2011 Emmy Award for best commercial (see blow).

The ad, for the Chrysler 200, was set to an Eminem song and featured the rapper cruising the gritty back streets and downtown boulevards of Detroit. Its defiant tone and city pride ?? the tagline ?imported from Detroit? entered the lexicon soon after ? created an emotional tone that many said captured the narrative of the US auto industry itself.

?That was a milestone in terms of turnaround [for Chrysler]. That convinced people they were back. Sales went through the roof as a result,? says Ms. Krebs.

Sales of the Chrysler 200 alone jumped 661 percent last year compared with 2010.

GM sold 2.5 vehicles in the US last year, a 17.6 percent increase. Ford came in second with 2 million in unit sales, an 11 percent increase.

Total industry light vehicles sales, including imports, are expected to reach 12.8 million for the year, an 11.3 percent increase from 11.5 million sold last year.

Polk, an automotive research firm in Southfield, Mich., forecasts that US sales will increase 7.3 percent to 13.7 million in 2012. Industry sales peaked in 2000, when total US sales reached 17.4 million. Polk reports that luxury will represent the fastest-growing segment this year as prices lower and manufacturers offer more options in that market, from smaller cars to SUVs.

Small car segments drove sales for all three manufacturers, a trend that started in 2008 when gas prices first sailed over the $4 per gallon mark and the Obama administration issued fuel economy standards starting in model year 2017. By 2025, fuel efficiency standards for new cars and light trucks will reach 54.5 mpg.

Ford reports small-car sales increased 25 percent in 2011, the greatest rate increase in that segment for any US automaker. Fiesta sales had the greatest gain, jumping 195 percent from 2010, with 68,574 sold.

?The industry has never seen a time when all three [automakers] had very good small cars. They?re finally back in the small car market,? says Krebs.

Helping drive up new car sales is pent-up demand. According to data from Polk, the average age of a vehicle in 2010 was 11 years, up from 8.4 years in 1995. Because people held onto cars longer these past few years, pent-up demand is naturally cycling into new cars sale of late.

?The used car market supply is very low and prices are very high and yet people are desperate to buy because their vehicles are so old,? Krebs says.

Import automakers in Asia were hit hard by the 2010 tsunami and earthquake in Japan, which slowed automobile production and subsequent sales.

Toyota sales were down 7 percent in 2011 compared to the previous year. The company sold 1.6 million vehicles last year. Honda did not release year-end sales data by press time. However year-to-year sales in November showed a 6 percent decrease, according to Edmunds.

-enters with a dramatic note

The storm rages on, outside. The only light is the occasional flickers of lightning, highlighting the shadows and intensifying your fears. As if on cue with the bolt of lightning, your door is kicked down, the sound and cold of torrential rain pouring in. A shadowy figure, shadily shaded in a dark black cloak, their face covered in shadows, enters without even wiping their feet. You challenge them, but receive no response.

The figure lowers their hood and says...

Hey guys, what's going on in here anyway? Just thought I'd pop in to say hello. Did I really reference shadows that many times?

Why I love London, by Uma Thurman

"When it comes to wardrobe, make-up - really anything in the creative arts - the greatest crews are in London," she said in an interview with monthly magazine Harper's Bazaar.

Thurman, 41, a mother of two and the star of 1994 hit Pulp Fiction, said she felt her continuing success defied Hollywood convention.

"There?s a lot of aggressive talk in this business," she said. "You turn 18 and they say you won?t have a career at 20. You turn 24 and they say you won?t last till you?re 30. Now it?s like, if I?m so over, why are you talking to me now?"

She is now due to star alongside Twilight star and teenagers' favourite Robert Pattinson in Bel Ami, the story of a young man's rise to power in Paris through his manipulation of the city's wealthiest women.

"To answer the ubiquitous question about this movie, yes, Robert is good-looking in person, but he doesn?t have that diamond-sparkle skin like in those Dracula movies," she said of her co-star.

"He?s a very disciplined, very serious, very ambitious, very organised actor."

"It was a fun character, a nice, meaty, dramatic role, and who doesn?t love an excuse to wear a corset?" she added.

Wilson Electronics introduces the world's first LTE signal booster ahead of CES

Love Verizon's LTE but just can't seem to get bars of service in your office or home? Wilson Electronics has announced the Sleek4G-V, which the company claims is the world's first 4G mobile signal booster. We haven't found any contenders to the claim, but either way the signal enhancer is bound and determined to beef up your high-speed data. In addition to providing Verizon-specific LTE, Wilson promises 2G / 3G connectivity for all major US carriers (iDEN capabilities excluded) just in case you need to actually, y'know, make calls on your phone. While it's designed primarily for outdoor use, an optional accessory kit can be purchased to make it work indoors quite soundly. Listed for $150, the Sleek4G-V should make its way to retailers by the second quarter of this year. Check out the press release for all the details.
