Shakedown or public service? Mug shot websites spread

8 hrs.

NEW YORK (Reuters) -- Janet LaBarba drank two glasses of wine during dinner at an upscale Dallas restaurant the night she broke up with her boyfriend. Later at a bar she ordered a beer. At home, she found herself crying as she readied for bed. She decided to go visit a friend.

Driving back long past midnight, she ignored blinking traffic lights and cruised through a stop sign. She was hauled down to the police station, charged with drunk driving, and photographed. It was the second time in six months.

The two episodes in 2009 cost LaBarba more than $20,000 in legal fees and fines and landed her in jail for a few days each time. A judge ordered her to wear an ankle monitor for five months. Yet the most stinging punishment, she felt, came when several websites posted her arrest mug shots, so that Internet searches of her name instantly turned up the compromising photos.

"It completely screwed with my life," LaBarba said. "People Googled me and it was very embarrassing." She said the images complicated her search for a job as well as a new relationship when her boyfriend's ex-wife looked up her name.

For a fee, she could have the photos removed. She chose to pay up.

Large data brokers have historically limited who gets to see their detailed files on people through a complicated application procedure that discourages casual users. Now, on the spur of the moment, anybody can access digital secrets, including criminal records, thanks to a proliferation of personal data Internet sites. One subset of these sites features mug shots that can be removed for a fee.

Many among America's 314 million people are affected. U.S. law enforcement officials made more than 13 million arrests in 2010, according to the most recent FBI statistics, although that number includes repeat arrests. The bureau maintains fingerprints and criminal histories for 72 million people, according to its Criminal Justice Information Services. Drug abuse and drunk driving are the most common reasons for arrest.

Clare Dawson-Brown, assistant district attorney in Travis County, Texas, home to bustedmugshots.com's founder Kyle Prall, said she is concerned personal data sites sometimes list incorrect information and do not comply with state orders to erase certain cases from the criminal records. "Now that this information is out there it is ever more horrific for people to get their lives back together," she said. "How do you get this garbage out of there?"

Several legal experts interviewed for this article said seeking money to remove mug shots from the Internet does not qualify as a crime such as extortion, since extortion requires a threat ahead of time to post the image unless the mug shot subject pays.

"Wow - it does seem to come pretty close to the line," Robert Weisberg, co-director of the Stanford Criminal Justice Center, said upon learning about such sites. "I'd say it skirts the line but may stop just short. (It) depends on how a reasonable person would perceive this in terms of fear."

Wanted: Evidence of civic value

LaBarba, 35, an event planner, rues the irresponsibility that led to her drunk driving arrests and believes she has learned important lessons. Yet she remains bitter about the public posting of her mug shot. "How is this legal?" she asked. "My business is my business. It's like me going to your house and looking through your things."

Bustedmugshots.com responds that it only posts publicly available images. "We are publishing public records with an interest in informing the community," Prall said, speaking in a series of interviews about his business. "We have never approached anybody attempting to generate revenue from them to remove a record from our database."

Bustedmugshots.com does not tell people they have posted the images but waits for them to learn of it, either on their own or through friends.

LaBarba paid what the site describes as "nominal" fees - $68 per photo for service within 10 business days, $108 within 24 hours - to make the photos disappear. An Internet search of her name now leads to genial photos of LaBarba pictured with lots of friends.

Prall, 33, grew up in Bloomington, a small city in central Illinois, the son of a circuit court judge. He set up the site a year and a half ago.

In 2008, inspired by a Florida publication, he started a weekly newspaper called Busted! In Austin during his spare time. Promoting his $1 paper with the slogan "Getting arrested isn't funny?... but the mug shots are," Prall expanded to bustedmugshots.com, continuing with his day job as a financial analyst at a power company until earlier this year.

His website collects its images from city, state and federal law enforcement agencies across the country, either for free or for a small fee. It has assembled more than 5 million records, he says. The company waives the fee for removing photos of those exonerated of any charges.

On the website, bustedmugshots.com describes itself as "a valuable asset to local law enforcement. Our dedication to providing criminal justice has led to breakthroughs in cold cases, and numerous tips on robberies, sex crimes and even murders." Asked for specific examples, Prall offered none. He said he plans to revamp the site to include a crime map and the ability for users to submit tips to the police.

Some local jurisdictions have resisted making mug shots available to him, although others say state public record laws oblige them to provide the images. Andrew Kossack, Indiana's former public access counselor, last year cleared the way for Prall to obtain mug shots, but he has reservations about the business: "It doesn't sit right in your stomach that this person should be someone who has so much control over your likeness."

Others complain about the drain on resources. "It takes time to distill the records," said Andrea Brandes Newsom, chief deputy corporation counsel for the city of Indianapolis. "Is it appropriate to make use of taxpayer resources in order for someone to profit?"

The U.S. Department of Justice maintains a national sex offender database, and many cities and counties offer free searches of criminal records, while some post mug shots. Because such records are not optimized for maximum Internet visibility, they typically do not turn up in average searches.

One of the most common crimes catalogued on Prall's site is drunk driving, but the advocacy group Mothers Against Drunk Driving sees little merit in public shaming. "We haven't seen evidence that tactics such as posting offenders' mug shots online leads to the reduction of drunk driving incidents or fatalities," said national president Jan Withers.

Prall says his site is a leader in a sector where competitors include mugshots.com, whosarrested.com, and gotchamugshot.com. "IS THIS YOU? Or your friend/family member? Click Here To Remove," Mugshotsworld.com tells users. "Originally $175. Discounted price of $100 available only for short time."

The sites seek to get photos prominently displayed in web searches. GotchaMugshot.com, for example, says on its site: "It's a common occurrence to find full names, profile, mug shot and offenses in the first page of most search engines like Google, Bing & Yahoo."

Officials at these other mug shot sites did not respond to calls and emails seeking comment.

'Creepy vigilante justice'

Prall has had his own run-ins with the law. As a young man he was found guilty of illegal consumption of alcohol as a minor, delivering/manufacturing of cannabis, trespassing into a car and drunk driving. A court sentenced him to 120 days in jail for the drug charge and 30 days for the drunk driving offense.

"I made a lot of little mistakes when I was young," Prall said. "I did some things in high school that were bad choices."

Prall does not make his own mug shots available on his website but said he would be comfortable publicizing his past. "I don't think all that stuff should be secret," he said.

Joelle Bem, who was arrested for crashing a friend's Ferrari while drunk in 2008, disagrees. She did not pay the roughly $400 bustedmugshots.com wanted to remove a series of images, saying she did not have the money. A Google image search of her name still quickly reveals several unflattering photos.

The divorced unemployed woman said the easy availability of the photos prompted her to move after a neighbor circulated the image to others after a disagreement. The images have also complicated the personal life of the former currency trader and financial analyst: "It's made dating really hard."

"I thought I was punished enough by Dallas County," said Bem, 38, who served 30 days in prison. "I didn't know I was going to be further punished and cyberstalked by creepy vigilante justice whose only intent is to collect money from me."

Ovarian cancer screening: Simple two-minute questionnaire that checks for six warning signs may lead to better early detection

ScienceDaily (Sep. 21, 2012) ? A simple three-question paper-and-pencil survey, given to women in the doctor's office in less than two minutes, can effectively identify those who are experiencing symptoms that may indicate ovarian cancer, according to a study by researchers at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. The study represents the first evaluation of an ovarian cancer symptom-screening tool in a primary care setting among normal-risk women as part of their routine medical-history assessment.

The results are published online in the Open Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Early detection of ovarian cancer is key to survival. Cure rates for those diagnosed when the disease is confined to the ovary are approximately 70 percent to 90 percent. However, more than 70 percent of women with ovarian cancer are diagnosed with advanced-stage disease, when the survival rate is only 20 percent to 30 percent.

The researchers evaluated the effectiveness and feasibility of several different symptom screening surveys. After a few tweaks to formatting and content, the version that proved most effective contained three questions that asked whether a woman was currently experiencing one or more of the following symptoms, all of which have been identified previously as potentially indicative of ovarian cancer:

  • Abdominal and/or pelvic pain
  • Feeling full quickly and/or unable to eat normally
  • Abdominal bloating and/or increased abdomen size

The survey also asked about the frequency and duration of these symptoms: how many days a month and for how long?

"Symptoms such as pelvic pain and abdominal bloating may be a sign of ovarian cancer but they also can be caused by other conditions. What's important is to determine whether they are current, of recent onset and occur frequently," said lead author M. Robyn Andersen, Ph.D., a member of the Hutchinson Center's Public Health Sciences Division. Previous research by Andersen and colleagues has found that about 60 percent of women with early-stage ovarian cancer and 80 percent of women with advanced disease report symptoms that follow this distinctive pattern at the time of diagnosis.

"Women with symptoms that are frequent, continual and new to them in the past year should talk to their doctor, as they may be candidates for further evaluation with ultrasound and blood tests that measure markers of ovarian cancer such as CA-125," she said. "Recent research indicates that approximately one in 140 women with symptoms may have ovarian cancer. Aggressive follow-up of these symptoms can lead to diagnosis when ovarian cancer can be caught earlier and more effectively treated."

The study involved 1,200 women, age 40 to 87, who were seen in a Seattle women's health clinic. More than half of the study participants reported being postmenopausal and approximately 90 percent were white. About half of the clinic visits were for a current health concern or for follow-up of a health problem reported at an earlier visit. The other half were for routine appointments such as mammography screening.

Of those surveyed, 5 percent had a positive symptom score that indicated the need for further testing. Of this group of about 60 women, one was diagnosed with ovarian cancer shortly thereafter. Of the 95 percent of women who tested negative on the symptom survey, none developed ovarian cancer during a 12-month follow-up period, which attests to the accuracy of the screening tool.

Those who reported current symptoms on the questionnaire or reported other medical concerns scored higher than those who did not. Non-white women were also about twice as likely to receive a positive symptom score as compared to white women.

"If ovarian cancer screening using symptoms is widely adopted, maximizing the specificity of screening programs will be important," the authors wrote. "Until better biomarkers are identified and tested, collecting information about symptoms appears to have promise." The bottom line, Andersen said, is that the screening tool can be used easily in a primary-care setting, is acceptable to patients and providers, and identifies women with symptoms that are worthy of concern with minimal false-positive results.

The study questionnaire that was tested in the clinic was based on a symptom-screening index developed in 2006 by Andersen and co-author Barbara Goff, M.D., professor and director of Gynecologic Oncology at the University of Washington School of Medicine.

The National Institute of Nursing Research funded the study.

Solving the Mystery of Search Engine Marketing - Online Advertising ...

Last updated 22 hours ago

Have you ever done a search on Google and something comes up that you are not expecting? Why did that show up? What made that link become relevant to your search query and how did it show up before other links? There are some mysteries involved with search engine marketing and some things that are easier to explain.

Search engine marketing, as you know, allows for three different options: SEO, PPC, or both. Having both SEO and PPC working in your brand's favor is a sure way to find yourself at the top of a search query.

In the case of Jimmy Hoffa,?it is no longer a mystery. Keywords, links, and relevant material are the items that made Jimmy Hoffa's burial found on page 2 of Google. While there may always be questions behind his death; there is no mystery to this search query. SEO was in control of this search engine marketing mission.

From this search query it is easy to see the importance that SEO and PPC brings to any search result. You want your business to show up first on Google, you can make it happen. Solving the murder of Jimmy Hoffa may have taken decades, but don't let it take you that long to get a grasp on search engine marketing. If you wait to solve the search engine mystery, by the time that you do, your brand may be buried below another corporation, just like Jimmy Hoffa.

While some mysteries seem nearly impossible to solve, search engine marketing doesn't have to.

VSP threats for government pie work | Insure Me Kevin

I?m mad because the government doesn?t love me.

Apparently, threats still work to get your way. Just like a teenager threatens to run away from home because he can?t use the family car on Saturday night, Rob Lynch, CEO of VSP, threatened to move the corporate headquarters out of California because stand alone vision plans were not to be offered in the new California Health Benefit Exchange (CHBE).

Yes Sir! How high Sir?

After Lynch?s threats to decamp from Sacramento and move to a state that really loved him surfaced, local leaders and politicians put the screws to the Exchange. We now are told that Executive Director of the CHBE, Peter Lee, will seek to have the board reconsider their decision.

Group plans first

VSP was built not on individual policies but on group plans. The group market has always been more lucrative because they usually require a minimum of 5 employees and the employer to pay part, if not all, of the premium. In 2007 VSP started selling individual plans and went nationwide in 2010.

Funnel of government money to private companies

It is so curious that so many health insurance companies that fought the Affordable Care Act and, now that it is here, they are fighting to get a piece of the pie. The issue for VSP is if they will be included on the CHBE site to be selected as a vision plan separate from the health insurance carrier. Because most of the individuals going through the CHBE will receive a government subsidy, which only applies to health insurance, there is the issue of applying the government credit only to the health and not the vision portion of the purchase.

Super size me with a vision plan

Frankly, it is a little immature for a CEO of company to threaten to move the headquarters out of state just because some government bureaucracy won?t give him free publicity on a website. While vision insurance is important, how many individuals that will be subsidized to purchase health insurance in the first place can really afford the extra expense of a vision plan?

My state loves you more?with tax credits

I commend Mr. Lynch for being the manager that will risk being ejected from the ball game to argue a bad call from an umpire. Unfortunately, in the hyper-competitive atmosphere where states are all too eager to offer incentives and tax breaks for companies to relocate, the threat of moving only adds fuel the poaching efforts.

ACA landscape

VSP has a legitimate concern over watching the market place change and consequently being put at a disadvantage. WellPoint, Anthem Blue Cross in California, purchased 1-800-Contacts a couple of months and there are other insurance companies that own their own optical providers. The ACA is changing the whole insurance market place and how insurance companies generate revenue (see my blog post on commissions and the MLR).

Regulations are a bummer

VSP is a great company and I hope they stay in the Sacramento region. But just as we are being told in this Presidential election season ?You didn?t build that?, private corporations need to remember ?You don?t own that?.

Beijing demonstrators damage U.S. ambassador's car

BEIJING (AP) ? The U.S. State Department says about 50 protesters in Beijing surrounded the car of the U.S. ambassador to China, causing minor damage to the vehicle.

Ambassador Gary Locke was unhurt, but diplomats have expressed concerns to the Chinese Foreign Ministry over Tuesday's incident. They were among thousands of Chinese involved in a boisterous anti-Japan demonstration that spilled over to the nearby U.S. Embassy.

People across China have engaged in days of angry protests over Japan's decision to purchase islands China claims. The U.S., a close ally of Japan, has also been the target of Chinese anger.

The incident comes amid heightened vigilance for American diplomats following violent attacks on U.S. embassies in Libya, Yemen and Egypt. Embassy officials have asked the Chinese government to protect American facilities and personnel.

Printed lasers for smart surfaces

Scientists have printed lasers using standard inkjet printers - a move that may lead to a much easier and cheaper way to make future laser devices.

A University of Cambridge team has used liquid crystals in place of ink to print tiny dots on a surface covered with a special coating.

Once the coating dries, the dots become lasers, the researchers wrote in the journal Soft Matter.

A laser is a "pure" form of light of one specific colour.

It has a very narrow wavelength, whereas sunlight or a the light from a bulb have a very broad wavelength range and consist of many colours.

If the laser power is very low, it may be invisible to human eye, but visible to instruments.

Lasers can be produced via a variety of methods, one of them - using liquid crystals (LCs).

One of the best-known examples of LC applications is an electronic display, such as a computer monitor or a flat-screen TV.

To make a laser, molecules in a LC material have to be aligned in a certain way. To do so, liquid crystal is usually poured between two glass plates covered with a specific coating that makes the molecules align in a particular manner.

But the recent work uses printing and a polymer solution film - with the polymer being similar to regular white glue used in arts and crafts - to align the molecules.

"Until now, no one has been able to print lasers; the materials typically used to make lasers only work on certain surfaces and after extensive, and expensive, manufacturing processes," Damian Gardiner of Cambridge University, one of the team members, told the BBC.

"A laser requires three things to work: a cavity, or space between two mirrors so light can bounce back and forth, a 'gain' medium to increase the amount of light, and energy.

"Our laser uses the special optical properties of the LC to get rid of the mirrors, and a dye is added to give gain.

"However, the key thing is that it is a liquid system - and can therefore be inkjet-printed, very inexpensively."

'Smart' wallpaper

The scientists printed hundreds of small liquid crystal dots onto a wet film, and as the film dries, the molecules in LC align and the dots turn into individual lasers.

One of the potential uses could be "smart wallpaper" in museums, said Mr Gardiner's colleague, W-K Hsiao.

"You can produce hundreds and thousands of small lasers in one step, using technology not very different to the one you use to print letters and holiday photos at home," he said.

"The lasers can be used for various display and lighting applications, or they can encode information and turn any surface into a 'smart surface'.

"If you print a museum wallpaper with laser dots inside, blind people who walk around the museum with a low-power scanner can this way know which room they're in, what exhibition is displayed, and where they have to turn to find an emergency exit."

In the past, researchers have used other non-traditional ways to create laser light - for instance, by using a living cell.

Modern applications of lasers range from DVD players, surgical equipment and supermarket scanners to industrial machinery and the latest Nasa rover, Curiosity, which uses lasers to probe the Mars surface.

Alzheimer's breaks brain networks' coordination

Tuesday, September 18, 2012

Scientists at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis have taken one of the first detailed looks into how Alzheimer's disease disrupts coordination among several of the brain's networks. The results, reported in The Journal of Neuroscience, include some of the earliest assessments of Alzheimer's effects on networks that are active when the brain is at rest.

"Until now, most research into Alzheimer's effects on brain networks has either focused on the networks that become active during a mental task, or the default mode network, the primary network that activates when a person is daydreaming or letting the mind wander," says senior author Beau Ances, MD, assistant professor of neurology. "There are, however, a number of additional networks besides the default mode network that become active when the brain is idling and could tell us important things about Alzheimer's effects."

Ances and his colleagues analyzed brain scans of 559 subjects. Some of these subjects were cognitively normal, while others were in the early stages of very mild to mild Alzheimer's disease. Scientists found that all of the networks they studied eventually became impaired during the initial stages of Alzheimer's.

"Communications within and between networks are disrupted, but it doesn't happen all at once," Ances says. "There's even one network that has a momentary surge of improved connections before it starts dropping again. That's the salience network, which helps you determine what in your environment you need to pay attention to."

Other networks studied by the researchers included:

  • the dorsal attention network, which directs attention toward things in the environment that are salient;
  • the control network, believed to be active in consciousness and decision-making; and
  • the sensory-motor network, which integrates the brain's control of body movements with sensory feedback (e.g., did the finger that just moved strike the correct piano key?).

Scientists also examined Alzheimer's effects on a brain networking property known as anti-correlations. Researchers identify networks by determining which brain areas frequently become active at the same time, but anti-correlated networks are noteworthy for the way their activities fluctuate: when one network is active, the other network is quiet. This ability to switch back-and-forth between networks is significantly diminished in participants with mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease.

The default mode network, previously identified as one of the first networks to be impaired by Alzheimer's, is a partner in two of the three pairs of anti-correlated networks scientist studied.

"While we can't prove this yet, one hypothesis is that as things go wrong in the processing of information in the default mode network, that mishandled data is passed on to other networks, where it creates additional problems," Ances says.

It's not practical to use these network breakdowns to clinically diagnose Alzheimer's disease, Ances notes, but they may help track the development of the disease and aid efforts to better understand its spread through the brain.

Ances plans to look at other markers for Alzheimer's disease in the same subjects, such as levels in the cerebrospinal fluid of amyloid beta, a major component of Alzheimer's plaques.

Usher Labels Custody Battle with Tameka Foster "An Attack"

Usher finally has primary custody of his children, and he's finally opening up about his three-year battle with Tameka Foster to achieve that status.

"This will be the only time that I've ever chosen to speak about it. I've been a man of integrity throughout the entire process, which I hope my boys will understand," the singer said last night on Oprah Next Chapter. "That's the way to go. That's the way to be."

So, what did the well-sculpted artist reveal?

He wasn't prepared for marriage in 2007: "I wanted to give her the wedding that she wanted. But I wasn't quite ready. I impregnated this woman, we were in a relationship, we were in love... I was taking responsibility."

The union started to fall apart once Usher V was born: "After that, I did get a great sense of the insecurities that were there and the fact that she wasn't coping well with being in this position, being married to Usher, and all that came with that."

Why did he decide to file for divorce? "I didn't know how to balance it. It was obviously too much for me. I didn't want to get to the point where I would cause myself harm or do anything that I felt like would be harmful to me, so I couldn't stay in it."

How bad have things gotten? "We don't see eye-to-eye. The friend that I was to Tameka, I don't know that I could ever be again because I really felt like we were friends. She made us enemies in a way that I could never understood. It wasn't until I was on the stand, where I cried, when I realized, 'Oh, this is an attack.'"

He's learned some painful lessons: "Having not had a father wasn't a reason not to be a good father. That was all of the reason to be a good father because I didn't have one. Every bit of who I have become and the way I think I have handled these things represents the example for how I would like for my boys to be able to do things."

Eat, drink and be social ? Restaurant review: The Social, Parc ...

The Social, in Cardiff?s Parc Thistle Hotel, is one of those places I?ve always meant to visit but never quite got round to. A couple of weeks ago, however, the incentive I needed came ? in the shape of an invitation from some friends who wanted our company while they used a voucher they had from one of the daily deals sites for a meal at the Social. So, we ate there on a Saturday night. It was previously the Crown Social ? a now defunct attempt by chef Martin Blunos to bring Michelin quality dining to the centre of Cardiff ? but is now just the Social, with new chef Iain Inman at the helm, and still has a reputation for good food, with two AA rosettes to its name.

On arrival, we decided to have a drink in the hotel bar ? a beautiful room, but sadly completely empty apart from us, so we didn?t stay long. We were then shown to our table, which was in what seemed to be another bar area, albeit a more restaurant-like one! One of our friends went to use the toilet while we looked at the menus, and on his return reported back that there was in fact a ?proper? restaurant area behind the wall that our table was next to, and that it had a much nicer (less bar-like) atmosphere than where we were sitting, so we asked if it was possible for us to move. To the credit of the staff, they sorted this out for us very quickly, with no fuss or face-pulling, and we were soon seated at a much nicer round, booth-type table, in an area with more fellow diners to keep us company and a bit more of a Saturday night atmosphere.

We started with a selection of breads ? I had a piece of the olive bread, which looked nice, but was sadly a bit doughy and heavy. I didn?t try the white or brown options, but was told these were better.

A selection of breads (including a rather doughy olive variety!)

To start, Mr W and I chose one of the Social?s sharing platters ? in our case a selection of smoked and cured fish. We enjoyed it ? it had a good selection of some fairly unusual fish, and reminded me of the kind of pickled and cured fish more commonly served in Scandinavia. My only complaint, however, was that it wasn?t really served in such a way as to be conducive to sharing ? several of the items had to be cut in half, and the layout, on a long, narrow plate, also made it a little awkward. Mr W and I are used to sharing food, but the acid test for me on a sharing dish is whether there would be any awkward moments if you were sharing it with someone you didn?t also share your bed with ? and in this case, I think there would have been!

Fish sharing platter

Our dining companions chose a sweetcorn soup with smoked chicken (this was my second choice from the menu had Mr W not wanted to share) and an artichoke dish (I forget exactly what it was). They also both enjoyed their choices.

My main course was venison, served with pickled vegetables, fondant potato and cabbage, and a red wine sauce. This was an excellent dish ? the venison couldn?t be faulted and the accompaniments worked well with its richness. We had a few side dishes as well, and the one I enjoyed most with my dish was a gratin of potatoes, leeks and bacon ? really good. There was also some very nice mash (Yukon Gold, apparently) on the go!

Venison

Mr W chose a rib-eye steak, and one of our friends went for a fillet. Both cuts of meat had their praises sung, both for quality of produce and the way in which they were cooked. They came with crispy fat chips. Our fourth and final main course was cod, served with garlic mash, mange tout and a foam. The type of foam escapes me ? but it apparently tasted as good as it looked (I have no issue with ?foams? and the like, so long as it?s not a case of style over substance!)

Rib-eye steak

My first choice of pudding was a banana souffl? (with the obligatory 20 minute souffle waiting time), but after two of us ordered this we were told that there was no more banana available and instead, the offering was pistachio. Our friend went ahead with this, but I changed my order, and was very pleased I did, as I ended up with raspberry macarons, served with raspberry sorbet and liquorice cream. This was fantastic! I love macarons, and to have them served as a dessert is heaven ? I don?t know why I had even considered the souffl?! The liquorice cream initially left me in two minds, especially when I realised it was inside the macarons as well as on the side, but it had a very delicate flavour which didn?t overpower the raspberry at all, and the creamy texture was a good contrast with the sorbet. A fantastic flavour combination.

Fruit crumble

Other choices around the table were a fruit crumble, which Mr W polished off before I could try it (I?m told it was very good, but hence I can?t tell you what kind of fruit it was, nor what the accompaniment was!) and a very generous cheese selection with an even more generous helping of biscuits and bread. We finished off with various coffees and digestifs.

The food we tried was excellent, and I can?t really find fault with any of it, but I?m still not sure I?d rush back to the Social as, for me, it lacked something ? I just can?t quite put my finger on what! I appreciate that?s an incredibly subjective statement to make, so I?ll try to explain, as it may be that it would be a perfect venue for some people! The food itself wasn?t cheap, with mains hovering either side of the ?20 mark. We didn?t have a voucher, so our meal, with wine, came to around ?70 per head. The quality did warrant the prices we paid, but at those prices, I?d want a pretty near perfect experience in order to rush back.

The service was efficient, but I felt at times it was a little bit ?stuffy? ? trying too hard to be formal and as a result losing some of the personal touch which is always welcome, even in fine dining establishments. We are a chatty bunch and we often chat to the waiting staff in restaurants. This visit was no exception, and although they were polite enough, it was almost as if they felt uncomfortable chatting to patrons (of course, maybe it was just that they didn?t like us!) I think sometimes restaurants make the mistake of thinking that formal has to equal impersonal ? but I?ve experienced some great examples of five star service with a very personal and friendly touch.

Similarly, I felt the ambience was a little bit lacking. It?s an odd set up with the hotel effectively having two bars, one of which is in fact part of the restaurant, and I?m very glad that we moved tables as I think we?d have felt a bit out on a limb had we stuck with our original table. Even once we moved, although the area had more atmosphere and was more comfortable, it still had a ?hotel dining room? feel to it. Sadly, very few hotel restaurants manage to overcome this, and even on a busy Saturday night you tend to find yourself expecting to see solo diners hiding behind a newspaper, or a rack of breakfast cereals lurking in the corner. We were admittedly quite late to leave the restaurant area, and as a result, we were able to witness the laying out of the jams and marmalades at neighbouring tables for the following morning?s breakfast!

I think on the whole, despite my reservations, I would still recommend the Social. The food was excellent, and I think my minor issues with the service and ambience are subjective ones, so perhaps you should give it a go and decide for yourself!

Recommended.

Take us back to you earliest days in Japan. What was your mind-set going into the almost completely foreign land of the rising sun?
Truthfully, when I came to Japan from WWE for the first time, I wasn?t enjoying what I had always dreamt that I?d be doing. I thought I was doing the right thing with WWE that first time around, but I wasn?t. I was really down on the whole thing, and then I got an offer in Japan. It was always on my bucket list. So first I toured there and had my first match with Kensuke, who was a really well respected individual in Japan. It was just awesome. It reminded me that I love what I do. I want to be one of the best big guys to come out of Japan. I know I finally have the respect of the people that I?ve worked with, and that?s what matters.

What are some of the differences between the two sports-entertaining cultures?
Wrestling in Japan is not featured on TV as extensively as it is here. It?s usually televised on Fridays and Saturdays, but often in clips and not complete matches. What really pushes the programming is their magazines. They help people follow all the action on a weekly basis. Also, WWE rings are much larger. I?m not sure of the exact specifications. The ropes are a different width as well. Japanese rings use cables, while WWE uses the classic ropes, so hitting off them is a much different experience.

Could you please translate the Japanese characters that appear on your face?
They state a variety of things, such as, ?Destruction Is Coming? and ?Beware of Tensai,? as well as ?Be Afraid, Very Afraid.? But if you are close enough to read them, it?s probably too late.

Iran's Guard admits advisers in Syria, Lebanon

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? The top commander of Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guard says the elite unit has high-level advisers in Lebanon and Syria but remains undecided on whether to send military reinforcements to help save Bashar Assad's regime.

Sunday's comments by Gen. Mohammad Ali Jafari mark the clearest indication of Iran's direct assistance to its main Arab allies, Assad and Lebanon's Hezbollah.

It also suggests Tehran is wary about being drawn into a Middle East conflict if outside forces attack Assad, who is locked in a civil war with rebel forces.

Jafari told reporters that Quds force members have been in Syria and Lebanon as advisers for a long time, but was not more specific.

He says decisions about whether to boost military aid to Syria if attacked would "depend on the circumstances."

'Innocence of Muslims' filmmakers influenced by controversial cleric ...

The Southern California men behind the "Innocence of Muslims" movie that has enraged the Arab world were influenced by a fiery Coptic cleric who owns a home in Huntington Beach and is known around the globe for making insults against the prophet Muhammad.

Although the preacher, Zakaria Botros Henein, has not been linked to the anti-Muslim film, his views were strikingly similar to those in the movie. He is often called?Islam's "Public Enemy No. 1" and teaches that Muhammad was a necrophiliac, a homosexual and a pedophile.

The three disparate figures who have emerged as key forces behind the movie, however, are all supporters of his views, according to interviews and records.

TIMELINE: 'Innocence of Muslims' unrest

Steve Klein, a militant Christian who worked on the script, has?publicly?hailed Botros as "a close friend" and compared him favorably to the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

Joseph Nassralla, the operator of the Christian charity organization whose offices were used in the film, directs visitors from his website to Botros' website, FatherZakaria.net.

And Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, who paid the actors and organized?every detail of?the producton, spoke openly of his devotion to the cleric while in federal prison the year before the August 2011 filming.

PHOTOS: Protesters attack U.S. embassies, consulate

Botros, 77, could not be reached for comment. His son, Benyamin, said his father was travelling and was unavailable.

?I cannot tell you where he is because his life is in danger,? the son said. He added that he did not think his father had played a role in the film. For his part, the younger Botros said the movie was ?just the truth.?

The priest has for decades been among the most controversial figures to Muslims. Jailed twice in his native Egypt for trying to convert Muslims, he was exiled by Hosni Mubarak?s government in the early 1990s in exchange for an early release. He fled to Australia and ran a parish there for more than a decade before departing in the midst of a dispute with the Coptic Pope over his authoritarian style.

In Australia, he began an online ministry that eventually moved to cable television. Reaching a worldwide audience that grew into the millions, he preached that Islam was a misguided religion and that the prophet Muhammad was a morally challenged man who engaged in homosexual acts and was a necrophiliac.

Such teachings earned him the ire of the governments of Egypt, Iran and Saudi Arabia; Al Qaeda allegedly declared a fatwa, calling for his death and offering a reported $60 million to his killer.

Early in the last decade, he relocated to Orange County, where he bought real estate under his legal name. He kept his whereabouts quiet, but his ministry continued. Hundreds of episodes of his 90-minute show were transmitted on the Coptic satellite channel, Al-Hayat, before the show was cancelled in 2010. A year later, he launched his own network, Westminster-based Alfady, where his programs continued.

Botros? views are in sharp contrast to those of mainstream Coptic leaders, who have condemned the film. Coptic Christianity traces its roots to Egypt, where it was said to have been founded by one of Christ?s apostles. Its followers constitute the largest religious minority in Egypt.

Protests sparked by the film?s trailer, which was translated into Arabic and posted on YouTube earlier this month, have now spread from Egypt and Libya to Sudan, Indonesia and elsewhere. Four Americans were killed in Benghazi, Libya, in attacks that coincided with the protests.

5 face-shaping genes identified

Researchers have identified five of the genes that shape a person's face, work that could help scientists better understand facial abnormalities such as cleft palate and someday might even help forensic investigators determine what a criminal suspect looks like from crime-scene DNA.

Researchers previously knew that genetics played a large role in determining face shape, since identical twins share DNA. However, little was known about exactly which genes are involved. Three genes were thought to have roles in the arrangement of facial features, and the new research confirmed their involvement. It also identified two other genes.

"We are marking the beginning of understanding the genetic basis of the human face," said lead researcher Manfred Kayser, head of the forensic molecular biology department at Erasmus MC-University Medical Center Rotterdam, Netherlands.

The study is part of the work of the International Visible Trait Genetics (VisiGen) Consortium, a group of six researchers who want to understand the genetics behind visible human characteristics. [ Genetics By the Numbers: 10 Tantalizing Tales ]

Facial factors
Using magnetic resonance imaging, Kayser and colleagues scanned the heads of 5,388 volunteers of European descent to create three-dimensional maps of each face. The group analyzed the genomes of participants with over 2.5 million DNA markers each to determine which genes could help explain any of the 48 facial characteristics under consideration, such as the distance between the eyes and the nose.

Pictures of 3,867 other subjects were used to verify any identified genetic associations linked to face shape.

The gene hunt confirmed three genes thought to be involved in face shape ? called PRDM16, PAX3 and TP63 ? plus two genes, dubbed C5orf50, and COL17A1, previously not known to play a role in facial structure.

"The most surprising thing is that we did find genes," Kayser told LiveScience. "To ever actually reach the level to start to understand the human face, I would not have imagined it eight years ago," when he started this line of work.

Experts cautioned that the exciting prospect of painting a portrait using DNA as a guide is still a long way off.

"Like height, we expect that face shape is influenced by many hundreds/thousands of genes with small effects," Lavinia Paternoster, a genetic epidemiologist at the University of Bristol, wrote in an email. "So although we are starting to understand what influences how the human face develops, we are nowhere near a position whereby we can predict a human face from someone's genetic code."

Paternoster, who is not involved in the current study, was part of the research team that found PAX3 was involved in nasion, the position of the top of the nose, as part of the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC). Kayser's research confirmed the role of PAX3 in nose position.

PAX3, a gene that regulates muscle-cell formation, controls the distance between the top of the nose and the right and left eyes. People with mutations in PAX3 develop Waardenburg syndrome, a rare genetic disorder characterized by wide-set eyes.

    4. Fort used in Caesar's conquest of Gaul found

"We use different face-scanning technology in ALSPAC, so the fact that this gene was discovered using both techniques is encouraging for future collaborations," Paternoster wrote. The confirmation was also notable because one group examined children, while the other analyzed samples from adults.

Mutations in PRDM16, a key gene in the body?s switch between available and stored fats, cause cleft palate in mice; mutations in TP63 cause "acro-dermato-ungual-lacrimal-tooth," a rare disease that affects multiple parts of the body and is characterized by missing teeth, thin skin, and extensive freckling. [ The 9 Weirdest Medical Conditions ]

COL17A1 encodes for a collagen gene that, when mutated, causes blistering. Almost nothing is known about the fifth gene, C5orf50.

Forensic implications
The curiosity-fueled research has a potential application for forensic investigations in the distant future, the researchers said. Facial descriptions from DNA could prove more reliable than witness accounts at crime scenes, which are limited by human memory and perception.

Currently, however, using DNA samples to recognize a suspect is currently a "far-fetched, 'CSI'-like scenario," Kayser said.

It's a little less far-fetched in the case of eye and hair color. Kayser and colleagues in August released HIrisPlex, a system that allows researchers to predict eye and hair color from DNA samples, although only from people of European descent. The forensic test is nearly 70 percent accurate in identifying blonds and up to 87.5 percent accurate for dark-haired individuals.

In the future, Kayser expects to look at more facial features, especially since the face scans stopped at the nose and excluded the lower face. He also expects to look at more landmarks on the face. The current study examined nine points on the face, although many more exist.

The VisiGen team also is planning to collaborate with the Bristol researchers, since having a larger sample size will allow the investigators to find genes that have smaller effects.

"We are rather at the beginning, where it is not quite clear if this forensic tool can be used with accuracy; this is still in question whether it's possible," Kayser said.

The study is detailed Thursday in the journal PLoS Genetics.

Kanye West Raps to Mitt Romney: Pay Your Taxes!

Poor Mitt Romney.

First, it comes out that Nicki Minaj is actually not voting for him in November. Now, in the track "To the World" (off the compilation album "Cruel Summer"), Kanye West takes a shot at the Republican nominee for President by hitting him where it counts:

In Romney's tax returns.

“Mitt Romney don’t pay no tax,” West decrees in a line from the single, following that quip with: “Mitt Romney don’t pay no tax.”

Yes, again. We think he has a point he wants to make. Listen for yourself:

This isn't the only time West has been critical of someone running for office or already in the highest office in the land. He said George W. Bush doesn't care about black people during the Hurricane Katrina disaster.

We wonder what Kim Kardashian thinks of this whole thing. Oh... right: Whatever her mother tells her to think.

Governor Bentley Goes to Nation's Capital to Secure Fair Funding for Tornado Recovery

Governor Robert Bentley on Wednesday traveled to Washington, D.C., as part of an effort to secure fair and adequate funding for the ongoing tornado recovery in the City of Tuscaloosa.

?

Governor Bentley met with Shaun Donovan, Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.? The meeting followed a letter Governor Bentley sent to President Obama on September 6, alerting the President to concerns regarding a formula used by HUD when calculating disaster recovery funding.? That formula caused hundreds of Tuscaloosa houses that were damaged or destroyed in the April 27, 2011, tornado outbreak to be excluded from recently-announced recovery assistance funding.

?

"My goal in writing to the President and meeting with the HUD Secretary is to give more people access to the resources they need on the long road to recovery," Governor Bentley said.? "Many people are still struggling to rebuild their lives.? I will do everything I can to help with long-term recovery needs and to make sure communities have fair access to available funding."

?

"We had a productive meeting this afternoon with Secretary Donovan.? We are confident he understands our concerns," Governor Bentley added.? "HUD is promising to consider our position, and we look forward to hearing a response in the coming weeks."

?

Nearly 4,700 homes in Tuscaloosa were severely damaged or destroyed by the tornado.? But according to the formula used for HUD's Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) assistance, the amount of properties that counted toward HUD recovery money was disproportionately low.

?

Specifically, the formula had a severe impact on Tuscaloosa's funding because of the high concentration of rental properties in some of the most severely damaged parts of the city.? The formula counts rental properties only if they are located within a census tract in which more than half of the owner-occupied properties sustained severe damage or were destroyed.? As a result of that formula, unmet housing needs have been severely underestimated in areas of Tuscaloosa with a high concentration of rental properties.

?

The State understands HUD cannot fund the entirety of the community's unmet needs.? However, Governor Bentley believes Tuscaloosa's fair share of funding is higher than the amount that has been allocated so far.

?

One particular area excluded in the funding is the exact location President Obama toured with Governor Bentley on April 29, 2011.? The tract where the President toured included 440 severely damaged rental units in the Alberta area of Tuscaloosa.? According to the HUD formula, none of those rental units counted toward Tuscaloosa's unmet housing needs.

?

Governor Bentley is appreciative of the HUD funding allocated for various parts of the state that were impacted by the April 27 outbreak.? The purpose of his letter to the President and the visit with Secretary Donovan is to help ensure the City of Tuscaloosa receives its fair share as well.

?

"Since April 27, HUD has been an active partner in the recovery process, and we appreciate the assistance Alabamians have been given," Governor Bentley said.? "The President himself saw firsthand the destruction in areas with high concentrations of rental properties.? I am asking the President and Secretary Donovan to reconsider the formula used to calculate assistance for those areas."

?

"My administration will continue working with Alabama's Congressional delegation, HUD and others on this issue," Governor Bentley added.? "HUD is an active partner in our state's recovery efforts, and we appreciate the department's continued support."
