(AP) ? A key prosecution witness in the trial of a former Rutgers University student accused of watching his roommate's intimate encounter via webcam testified Monday that she agreed to keep it a secret because it was so shocking to see the images ? but that it wasn't under wraps for long.

"First of all, it was shocking. It felt wrong. We didn't expect to see that. And now that what we did, it was like we shouldn't have seen it," Molly Wei said told jurors. "We didn't want people to know what had happened."

But within minutes, she testified, she and defendant Dharun Ravi were online chatting with friends about seeing two men kissing. And within the hour, Wei said, she agreed to show a few seconds of the video stream to four other women who visited her dorm room.

Still, she said, Ravi did not intend to humiliate his roommate.

Ravi's roommate, 18-year-old Tyler Clementi, jumped to his death from New York's George Washington Bridge in September 2010, days after the spying and the gossip about it online and in their dorm.

Ravi, who turns 20 on Tuesday, faces 15 criminal counts, including invasion of privacy and bias intimidation. To convict him of bias intimidation, the most serious charge he faces, prosecutors would have to persuade jurors that Ravi acted out of bias toward gays.

Wei, 19, was charged initially but entered a program that will allow her to keep her record clean if she meets a list of conditions, including doing community service, working or attending school full-time. She also agreed to cooperate with authorities and testify truthfully in Ravi's trial.

She said she has completed about 250 of the 300 hours of community service required.

There is one requirement that was changed for her. She was to go through a program on cyberbullying or dealing with people with "alternative lifestyles." Since no program like that was offered in Middlesex County, she instead saw a psychologist.

Unlike other more casually dressed college students who have testified so far in the trial, Wei wore a black business suit. And unlike the others, she kept her voice audible even during the most uncomfortable moments.

She said that she invited Ravi, whom she had known since middle school, to her dorm room for a snack a few minutes after 9 p.m. on Sept. 19, 2010. When Ravi tried to go back, she said, Clementi told him that he wanted the cramped dorm room to himself for a few hours. So Ravi returned.

Within a few minutes, she said, he used her computer to view live images from his webcam. It was then, she said, that she saw about two seconds of Clementi and an older man kissing.

Even though she said they initially agreed not to talk about what they had seen, she asked Ravi to tell a friend about it during an online chat that began at 9:20 p.m. And within minutes, word got around the dorm.

She said she agreed to turn the webcam back on at the request of a woman who was among a group dropped by her room.

"It was the exact same image, except that they had taken their tops off," she said. "As soon as they saw it, I turned it off."

Ravi's defense lawyer, Steven Altman, asked a series of questions about Ravi's intentions.

? "Dharun never told you he wants you to go around telling everybody about what you saw on those two seconds Sunday night?"

? "Dharun never told you he wanted to make Tyler uncomfortable?"

? "Dharun never told you he wanted to intimidate Tyler?"

To each, she answered, "No."

Wei was expected to be back on the witness stand for more cross-examination on Tuesday.

Also Monday, jurors heard from university official William O'Brien that Clementi requested a room change about 30 hours after the alleged spying ? and a day before he killed himself.

O'Brien, associate director of residence life at Rutgers, told jurors that his staff did not see Clementi's request for a new roommate until after he was reported missing from campus.

NLL Lacrosse: Minnesota Swarm Pick Up First Road Win Of The Season Against Washington Stealth

The Minnesota Swarm needed a win on the road. Winless in their first two, the urgency was there, and the time was right to get the first one behind them. Facing the surprisingly 1-5 Washington Stealth gave them a prime opportunity to impress new head coach Joe Sullivan, and to get above .500 for the second time on the season.

Things seemed to be going rather splendidly for both sides, with each side scoring three in the first quarter, and headed into the second each thinking of more of the same. It wouldn?t stay that quiet.

By the time the half ended, the Swarm would have gone on a 7-0 run, and the Stealth had no chance. Swarm rookies Jordan MacIntosh, Corbin Tao, and Jay Card led the charge along with All-Star Ryan Benesch. The Stealth simply had no answer for the Swarm offense, all while the Swarm defense went into lock down mode and held the Stealth to outside shots that Evan Kirk could stop easily.

It was one of the best quarters of lacrosse the Swarm have played in two years. It wouldn?t last.

The third quarter was one of the worst quarters of the year for the Swarm. Penalty after penalty gave the Stealth too many chances to get back in the game, especially a five minute major to Swarm captain Andrew Suitor. However, the Swarm pulled together, found a way to kill the penalties, and get their game back into a groove.

The fourth quarter would see the Swarm pull back ahead, and never look back. The offense got going again, the defense remained solid, and the Swarm won it by a large margin.

This was definitely a statement game, even if it was against the last place team. Both the offense and defense played well, and Evan Kirk showed he can hold down the fort when things get out of hand. Sullivan has to be happy with the way his team performed, especially in the 2nd, and will likely have some conversations about discipline regarding the 3rd, but overall, it was a solid effort.

A massive improvement for the Swarm offense. In the last game, six different players scored goals, but only one scored more than one. Tonight, ten different players scored and five scored two each. Benesch had 2G and 6A, Kevin Ross has 2G and 4 A, and Crawford has 2G and 2A. An impressive turn around from a week ago.

With the win, the Swarm improve to 4-3 on the year, knocking the Stealth to 1-6. This is the first road win of the season for the Swarm, who remain on the road for the next three weeks.

Next up, however, is the All-Star game tomorrow in Buffalo for Ryan Benesch, Callum Crawford, Jordan MacIntosh, and Andrew Suitor. That game can be watched on the NLL Network on NLL.com, and also on ESPN3 inside the US.

The Advantages of New Exterior Doors | The Board Magazine

By Adrianna Noton

The ideal exterior door would be affordable, attractive, durable, weather-resistant and secure. That may seem like a lot to ask of a door, but a variety of doors are up to the task. The benefits don?t stop there either. Exterior doors enhance the look of a home, inside and out. Exterior doors with glass panels not only let more light into the home, but allow homeowners to identify visitors before opening the door, improving security. Quality doors improve the insulation of a home, too, reducing heating and cooling costs. With a smooth operation and low maintenance materials, new exterior doors can add convenience to life at home as well.

For homeowners who are considering selling their home at a future date, the benefits of quality exteriors door are even more numerous. Home improvements that improve the appearance of homes traditionally have higher resale values than other kinds of home improvement projects. When it comes to recovering the costs of a project, an entry door replacement tops the list. Homeowners can expect to recoup 60 to 100 percent of the cost for entry doors when it comes time to sell their homes, according to a leading remodeling industry magazine.

Exterior doors are constructed with a wide range of materials, including wood, steel, fiberglass and aluminum. Many doors are made with a combination of materials. It?s the material on the surface that most affects the price of the door.

Wood

Wood remains the most popular choice for exterior doors, and wood is the material with the most decorative options. Maple, fir, cherry, oak and mahogany are just some of the woods used to craft wood exterior doors. Paint options are nearly limitless. Solid wood doors are the strongest and the most expensive. New finishes have made modern wood doors are hardier than wood doors made just a few decades ago.

Steel

Steel doors are considered the best choice when security is the top priority. Steel exterior doors are also the least expensive option. Cheaper versions demand periodic repainting. Quality steel doors may be clad in vinyl to make them more resistant to moisture, may be coated in wood fiber to provide a surface for paints and stains or may be laminated in wood veneer.

Fiberglass

Fiberglass exterior doors are made from a composite construction. Fiberglass is molded over a wood framework filled with foam insulation. Fiberglass doors require no maintenance and are a good choice for areas with inclement weather. Fiberglass doors give the appearance of wood but are more durable than doors made from wood alone.

Aluminum

Joint committee approves initial funding period for 11 projects

This release is available in German.

While most of the programmes funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) focus on scientific projects, the DFG's "Gertezentren Core Facilities" initiative was developed to improve research frameworks. Many German universities and research institutions have outstanding and often unique scientific instrumentation and research infrastructure. Access to these advanced technologies plays an important role in many branches of science. However, establishing instrumentation centres and networks for shared use often fails due to extensive structuring processes. A call for funding proposals issued by the DFG in March 2011 sought to address this issue by providing support to pilot projects dedicated to professionalising the use and management of infrastructure at suitable facilities.

The initiative, which provides successful projects with funding for a three-year period, attracted more than 120 inquiries and 57 funding proposals, confirming a widespread interest in the development of capacities in this area. In addition to descriptions of their planned activities and measures to strengthen links between instrumentation centres and the scientific community, universities applying for funding were required to show that the DFG's support would also be used to create sustainable infrastructure.

Eleven projects were selected in the multi-tiered review process, and each will receive a total of 450,000 euros over the next three years. The "Good Manufacturing Practice Facility" in Dresden is a centre for cutting-edge technology in the field of regenerative therapy, while the "NeuroImaging Core Facility" in Magdeburg specialises in medical imaging technology for neuro-scientific research. Three other projects are based in the field of optical imaging: "JIMI" a network for intravital microscopy based in Berlin and Jena, the "Biopolis Dresden Imaging Platform", and a nationwide network for microscopy and imaging "German BioImaging" which will be coordinated from Constance and Freiburg.

Another nationwide network, specialising in NMR spectroscopy, is coordinated by researchers in Frankfurt and Munich. The "Quantitative Biology Center Tbingen (QBiC)" combines a range of "omics" technologies with expertise in the field of bioinformatics. In Berlin, the "BioSupraMol" instrumentation centre and competence network specialises in chemical analysis for supramolecular chemistry. Targeted analyses are also the focal point at the "Mnster Isotope Research Center", which has an extensive range of facilities for geoscientific research. The last two projects are in the fields of materials science and structural physics: the "Ernst Ruska-Centre (ER-C)" in Aachen/Jlich, which manages a collection of unique electron-microscopy technologies; and the "Center for Nanoanalysis and Electron Microscopy (CENEM)" in Erlangen, which specialises in nano-characterisation with electrons, x-rays and scanning probe microscopy.

The DFG hopes that the initiative and its funded measures will serve as a signal to universities, providing impetus for enhancing structures with regard to infrastructure resources. The responsibility for implementing these measures will continue to lie with the universities and research institutions. "Universities are rethinking their approaches on how to manage and utilise their instrumentation infrastructure. The response to the DFG's call for funding proposals demonstrates the need for support in this area," emphasised DFG President Matthias Kleiner following the announcement of the funding decision at a session of the DFG's Joint Committee. The DFG now plans to issue another call for funding proposals in this area later this year.

Barcelona faces tricky trip to Atletico in Spain

By PAUL LOGOTHETIS

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 9:52 a.m. ET Feb. 23, 2012

MADRID (AP) -Barcelona faces a tricky match against a rejuvenated Atletico Madrid on Sunday when it can ill afford to drop any more points with Real Madrid holding a 10-point lead in the league standings.

Atletico hasn't lost in seven league matches since Diego Simeone took as coach to start the new year, and the Vicente Calderon Stadium has not been friendly to Barcelona of late. The three-time defending champions have lost in three of their last four visits.

Madrid plays at Rayo Vallecano earlier Sunday, and the league leaders are without forwards Karim Benzema and Angel di Maria, who recently picked up injuries.

Benzema will likely miss two weeks with a right leg muscle injury, while Di Maria aggravated a right leg muscle problem that had sidelined him in 2012 until he returned Sunday to score but hurt himself again.

Madrid has won 18 of its last 19 league matches, including eight straight on the road. Rayo, which has won three straight and is in eighth place, has offered discounted tickets to its unemployed fans to help fill the Vallecano Stadium.

Barcelona is coming off a spectacular 5-1 victory over Valencia, in which Lionel Messi scored four times to move to within one of Cristiano Ronaldo's league-leading goal tally of 28. Messi swiftly dismissed talk of a drop in form as the Argentina forward passed the 40-goal mark for the third straight season.

While Messi looked his Ballon d'Or best, Andres Iniesta is slowly returning to form after being sidelined by injury while Xavi Hernandez made a late cameo as coach Pep Guardiola has been reluctant to start the midfielder because he has been bothered by an Achilles problem much of the season.

With a fourth straight league title looking increasingly difficult, Barcelona's players have come out in support of Guardiola, who has yet to commit to another season in charge.

"The players would feel guilty if Pep doesn't renew," Barcelona fullback Daniel Alves said. "Thanks to him we've won so many things. He used to have a lot of hair but that's not the case any more thanks to us players."

Atletico will be without Brazilian playmaker Diego, a big loss for Simeone's attack, which has also relied heavily on Radamel Falcao and Adrian Lopez. Atletico's defense has also improved vastly, conceding only one league goal under Simeone, but will be stretched against Barcelona.

"Diego's absence is very notable due to his characteristics, but we'll find a solution," Simeone said.

Valencia must recover from the lopsided loss to Barcelona against Sevilla on Sunday, while Athletic Bilbao is at Villarreal, which remains three points above Racing Santander and the relegation zone.

Santander plays Sporting Gijon in a relegation zone matchup.

Also, it's: Real Betis vs. Getafe; Malaga vs. Zaragoza; Espanyol vs. Levante; Osasuna vs. Granada; and Real Sociedad vs. Mallorca.

#4: Don?t waste time with low paid activities.
Let others do the grunt work.

#5: Outsource instead of out-task.
Most business people focus too much on giving their tasks to someone else. You need to think strategically. Outsource entire critical but repetitive tasks for years to come.

#6: List building is the backbone of your business online efforts.
List building is the hidden weapon of the gurus. This is how they make their money. They talk with each other and they promote products from other gurus on their email list. That would be impossible without their amazing list building skills.

#7: Find a niche and dominate it.
Most gurus out there focus on just finding a niche. Finding a niche is a great first step. But it?s not enough. You need to find a niche and to position yourself as the clear and most obvious choice in the mind of your customers. Rich Schefren will show you exactly how to do this.

#8: Consider your competitors in your business online strategy and planning.
Left unchecked, your competitors will eat you alive. They will copy everything you do successfully. As a result, they will gain the market share that deserves to be yours.

#9: Business model innovation.
The landscape changes. Your business has to adapt. You don?t do it just by throwing more time and resources at it. You reinvent your business from its core.

#10: Keep track of your numbers.
Rich Schefren calls them ?business metrics?. They are the key numbers of your business like: the lifetime value of your customer, the conversion rates, the daily revenue value, the profit share etc.

Some businesses do too much and other businesses too little. You need to find a balance. The balance comes from keeping track of a few key business metrics. They will give you the highest amount of information by using the lowest amount of resources.

#11: Rich Schefren says: ?Put everything on autopilot.?
The main purpose of your business should be to generate more freedom and options for yourself. It can not do this if you spend all your time doing stuff.

#12: Have something to aim for at the end of the day.
Many people waste time with frivolous activities because they don?t have a life. They do not have something real to do after they finish their work. You should do some activities that you find valuable at the end of the day. Going to a club or spending more time with your loved ones are great choices as long as they are valuable to you.

#13: Gain momentum.
You can not really hope for a business online success unless you progress gradually and constantly. No list building or business online strategy will work unless you apply it each day. Don?t do this and you will live through an endless circle of frustration.

The above list building and business online strategies by Rich Schefren will help you generate higher profits faster than in the past. Make sure you apply them. They will not work by themselves. You need to actually use them.

White House attacks contraception bills (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The White House said Monday legislation in the Senate that would give employers broad leeway to restrict coverage for contraception is "dangerous and wrong."

Press secretary Jay Carney took aim at legislation by Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla. ? a possible GOP vice presidential candidate ? and Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., that would allow any employer to deny birth control coverage if it runs counter to their religious or moral beliefs.

Another bill, by Sen. Roy Blunt, R-Mo., would go even further by allowing health plans to deny coverage for any service that violates their beliefs.

Both approaches are far more expansive than allowing conscience protections just for churches and church-affiliated employers. President Barack Obama stirred up the issue recently by trying to get religious-affiliated employers like Catholic hospitals to provide free birth control coverage to their employees. The president bowed to intense opposition last week and declared that such coverage would be provided by insurance companies instead.

Carney said both the Rubio and Blunt bills take "absolutely the wrong approach." He said it's vital for women no matter where they work to have access to free preventive care, including birth control.

Alex Conant, spokesman for Rubio, responded that, "The Obama administration is willing to violate religious liberties with its federal takeover of health care. It's clear that legislation is needed to protect these important constitutional freedoms from federal overreach."

Random Reviews: Parts Unknown #98: Thunder

I didn't want to sit through yet another match between Hunico and Ted DiBiase, so I'm taking a break from Smackdown (until next week, that is). This is a review of Thunder, WCW's topsy-turvy b-show. To be more specific, this episode aired on February 11, 1999. Woah, that was exactly thirteen years ago...my brain just imploded.

Thunder was wildly inconsistent. Some episodes seemed as if they were booked by Vince Russo on crack. Luckily, I chanced upon one of the "normal" episodes, though I use that word loosely. Since I'm dealing with vintage wrestling, I'll eschew the pros/cons format. And yes, that's a picture of Glacier. I couldn't find a suitable Thunder logo.

~ We're in the thick of a double-elimination tag team tournament? This could be interesting. By the time '99 rolled around, WCW's tag division was a bit of a mess. Most of the teams in this tournament were makeshift dyads comprised of singles stars. Our first bout pits Mike Enos and Bobby Duncum Jr. against Faces of Fear. Wait, Faces of Fear had a brief run in '99? With Jimmy Hart as their manager? The action is solid. Fuck, Meng is a bad, bad man. I love how he shakes off a piledriver like he was slapped in the face by Lord Littlebrook. If only the finish made sense. The Barbarian turns on Meng at the behest of Jimmy Hart. Why??? I assume that a push was in the cards, but guess what? This was the last time that The Barbarian was remotely relevant. There goes that idea!

~ Chris Kanyon (formerly known as Mortis) visits Raven at his sumptuous home. Raven has bamboozled his mother into believing that he is riding out a deep depression. Naturally, she is worried about him, so she asks Chris to watch him while she's gone. Raven proceeds to withdrawal funds from his bank account, and he treats Chris to an exorbitant shopping spree. We watch them shop for clothes. I swear to God. Maybe it's supposed to be an in-joke since Kanyon was gay in real life. I don't know. This is WCW's Thunder, kids.

~ Cruiserweights! We get an up-and-coming Lash LeRoux opposite Super Calo. This was a lively, kinetic match. They were given plenty of time, and I appreciate the clean pinfall.

~ In the funniest backstage segment that I've seen in quite awhile, we see Glacier trying to sell his gimmick to Ernest "The Cat" Miller. I mean, he pawns off the entrance music, the mood lighting, the ridiculous outfit...everything. Kaz Hayashi ends up buying the whole lot. Priceless.

~ Another tag match, this time involving Fit Finlay/Dave Taylor and Billy Kidman/Chavo Guerrero. A nice blend of styles, but it leads to the second partner betrayal of the night. This was WCW's biggest problem in the late 90's/early 00's (well, apart from short, meaningless title reigns). There were way too many turns, both heel and face. Every man and woman on the roster played the part of a backstabber at least once, and if they didn't, they were the ones being stabbed in the back.

~ Holy shit. That was an amazing video package. It built up the tag team tournament, it reviewed the paragon history of the WCW Tag Team Championship and it made the titles look prestigious. Why can't the WWE stitch a similar video package together to aid their dying tag division?

~ A Disco Inferno match. Next!

~ Wow. The main event could be featured as a Match That Time Forgot. Here we have Chris Benoit/Dean Malenko versus Kaz Hayashi/Van Hammer. Of course, Hayashi approaches the ring in full Glacier regalia. Surprisingly, this is a tight match. The fans go home happy.

I need to review Thunder more often.

Come and Get It | Food With Legs

Come and Get It's graffiti-style sign suits their temporary status.

Is it possible that Queen and Spadina is replacing King and Portland as ground zero for inventive, affordable, and delicious food in downtown Toronto? First Banh Mi Boys opened with their tightly focused menu of cheap deliciousness and now Come and Get It has opened around the corner.

Come and Get It's menu has a pleasingly simple matrix-style.

Come and Get It's menu has a pleasingly simple matrix-style. Click for a larger version.

Through a matrix-style menu, each of Chipotle Short Rib, Hawaiian Pork Belly, Granny Smith?s Chicken Caesar, and Herbed Crunchy Green Beans are served as an $8 sandwich, a $9 salad, or a $7 poutine. The sides menu follows the obvious options of fries ($3), salad ($4), or poutine ($5)?and sandwich combos add fries and a drink ($11), salad ($12)?and drink ($13), or poutine and a drink.

The Chipotle Beef Salad from Come and Get It.

The Chipotle Beef Salad from Come and Get It.

That seems like a very tight selection but it allows a pretty remarkable range of options. Nothing could be closer to a meat-lover?s heart than the poutine garnished with chicken skin that we tried; but equally the crunchy bean sandwich is getting rave reviews from the veg crowd. In between, balance is struck with options like the beef salad we enjoyed particularly for the little details like crispy onions as garnish and savoury mushrooms.

Come and Get It's Hawaiian Pork Belly sandwich could use a slightly more intense pineapple flavour--maybe by carmelising the fruit.

Getting into the good books of a variety of customers that range from the health-minded lunch crowd straight through to the give-me-grease now late-night set is important for Come and Get It because they?ll only be around for a short while. The condo developers who own the building rented the space that used to be Ackee Tree on the understanding that it would be a temporary gig of uncertain duration.

Surely when poutine is served in heaven it's garnished with chicken skin.

The furniture carries the temporary theme through by a nearly unanimous display of laminated chipboard. The retro highlights reach their pinnacle in the form of vintage lunch boxes that hold condiments and also Archie comics (premium Betty and Veronica Double Digests at that).

From talking to the staff they?re sanguine about the temporary status: They?d like to be there for a year or more but know that condo developers aren?t in the landlord business so will take however many months they can get. Go while you can especially if you find yourself at Queen and Spadina during their non-peak hours.

Path fumble highlights Internet privacy concerns (Reuters)

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) ? A privacy debate surrounding fledgling social network Path went viral this week, triggering discussions on blogs and on Twitter about how far social networks can go in using members' private data.

Path was sharply criticized in blogs and social media forums this week after an independent software developer revealed that Path's Apple iPhone application uploaded users' address book data to its own servers without permission.

Its travails demonstrate how easily today's social media startups -- which by definition thrive by sharing users' views and information -- can still run afoul of users' privacy sensitivities even at a time of constantly shifting consumer attitudes.

Path, which now has 2 million users, launched in November 2010 to considerable buzz around Silicon Valley. The service has positioned itself as a more intimate and visually appealing version of Facebook -- the social network that weathered a string of privacy controversies of its own as it grew to become a multibillion-dollar company on the brink of going public.

ANGRY TWEETS

On Tuesday, Arun Thampi, a software developer in Singapore, discovered Path's data uploads and published his findings on his website. The news went viral, sparking commentary on technology blogs and on Twitter.

Other bloggers quickly noted that Path's practice may have run afoul of Britain's Data Protection Act and Apple's App Store policy prohibiting such data access.

Dave Morin, Path's chief executive, responded on Thampi's blog, saying that his company uploads the data to help users find and connect to their friends, and that the company had already rolled out an opt-in mechanism for the Google Android platform that asked user permission before accessing contact data.

Morin later apologized in a blog post on Path's website, adding that the company deleted "the entire collection of user uploaded contact information from our servers."

By then, hundreds of Path users (and many nonusers) had already vented their frustration at Morin through Twitter.

Now, as Path looks to emerge from the episode, its fate may be determined largely by the social network that it hopes to challenge: Facebook.

SHIFTING NOTIONS OF PRIVACY

Facebook's success, and its record of shrugging off the periodic backlash over perceived privacy intrusions, has fundamentally changed consumer attitudes, analysts say.

Facebook has "shown and demonstrated that it can push the boundary of what can be considered private," said Charlene Li, the founder of the Altimeter Group, a social media research company. "Our notions of privacy change over time, based on the utility of that information."

But the problem, analysts say, was that Path did not ask for permission to access users' address books -- even if consumers are increasingly comfortable with the idea.

Ray Valdez, an analyst at Gartner, said the company took a hit to its reputation but will move on.

"It's not a fatal error," Valdez said.

Still, in papers filed last week with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission ahead of its highly anticipated initial public offering, Facebook noted explicitly the danger of potential backlashes over privacy. It said that improper access of user information could "harm our reputation and adversely affect our business."

Even if public attitudes toward privacy appear to be softening in a free-sharing era, analysts say such controversies can pose grave threats to fledgling companies that often do not have internal checks -- such as chief privacy officers at larger companies like Facebook.

For startups seeking to build a user base, the risk can be particularly acute.

"These networks exist only if you trust them," said Li of Altimeter Group. "For these growing companies, every single step you take has to be taken with building trust in mind."

As competition intensifies in the social networking arena, a company's perceived sensitivity to privacy issues could affect its bottom line.

Last week, as Google Inc grappled with an outpouring of criticism over how it utilized private user information across its various products, Microsoft Corp - a chief competitor to Google - unfurled an ad touting its own privacy controls.

"Facebook has an enormous user base and can weather a few privacy storms," said M. Ryan Calo, a fellow at the Stanford Law School Center for Internet and Society. "It may not be an existential threat when you have 800 million users, but it is a competitive differentiator that can't be ignored."

Mayor Robert Conley welcomed Realogy to Madison, thanking Hampshire, Realogy and state officials, for their partnership in repositioning a functionally obsolete building into a LEED Certified, state-of-the-art building, which he predicted would become another award-winning building in the state of New Jersey.

Guadagnos support of business retention in the state, citing the great progress the administration has made in the last two years. We have ended the decade of joblessness and business rejection in New Jersey, and were back to letting businesses know that theyre welcome to grow here, said Gov. Christie. The noise of construction is the greatest noise I can hear as Gov., and I want to thank Hampshire and Realogy for continuing to invest in the state of New Jersey and contributing to its comeback.

Hampshire partnered with Kohn Pederson Fox, an international architectural firm recognized for design excellence and innovation in its buildings throughout the world, to pioneer a major change in commercial real estate development in New Jersey combining great use of space, natural light and the latest technologies with superior design.

Armory Center for the Arts to Showcase Entertainment Design ...

Detail of a painting by Entertainment Design student Annis Naeem.

?I plan on bringing a little bit of Hollywood into this department,? Tim Flattery told us last year after he was named chair of Art Center College of Design?s Entertainment Design Department. ?Rather than just having companies come in to look at student?s artwork, we?re also going to showcase the students and the College.?

And now it?s not just the entertainment industry getting a new level of exposure to the work created by Entertainment Design students, but the general public as well, as the exhibition Fantastic Scenarios debuts at the Armory Center for the Arts this Saturday night with an opening reception from 7:00-9:00 p.m. The exhibition, which was organized by Flattery and runs through May 13, features work created by current Entertainment Design undergraduate students.

From the Armory?s website:

Designing new worlds, characters, and objects that have never before been seen requires great imagination as well as an understanding of how things are built ? and how to communicate with the people who will build these new worlds. Art Center?s Entertainment Design curriculum helps students develop the skills and creative focus required of concept designers in the entertainment industry.

Real estate agent convicted for forgery

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) - A former Lafayette real estate agent has been convicted of forgery for allegedly falsifying sales disclosure documents to avoid paying property taxes.

A Tippecanoe Circuit Court judge found Brenda K. Hatfield guilty Wednesday of 12 counts of forgery and acquitted her of one count of corrupt business influence.

The Journal & Courier reports that videotaped recordings were played back Wednesday of Hatfield answering questions posed by police detectives and her attorney. Hatfield explained in the recordings how she filled out forms and how assistants allegedly forged the signatures of "buyers" who actually were renters.

Indiana law taxes owner-occupied properties at considerably lower rates than rental properties.

Renters testified they discovered they were listed as buyers when they saw their names in property sales listings in the Journal & Courier.

Obstacles no barrier to higher speeds for worms

ScienceDaily (Feb. 8, 2012) ? Obstacles in an organism's path can help it to move faster, not slower, researchers from New York University's Applied Math Lab at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences have found through a series of experiments and computer simulations. Their findings, which appear in the Journal of the Royal Society Interface, have implications for a better understanding of basic locomotion strategies found in biology, and the survival and propagation of the parasite that causes malaria.

Nematodes, which are very small worms, and many other organisms use a snake-like, undulatory motion to propel forward across dry surfaces and through fluids. There are, however, many instances where small organisms must make their way through a fluid-filled environment studded with obstacles that are comparable in size to the swimmers themselves. Nearly all microscopic nematodes, about one millimeter in length, face such barriers when moving through wet soil -- the soil's granules serve as hurdles these creatures must navigate. Similarly, the malaria parasite's male gametes, or reproductive cells, must swim through a dense suspension of their host's blood cells in order to procreate. A similar situation arises for spermatozoa moving through the reproductive tract.

In the Journal of the Royal Society Interface study, the Applied Math Lab (AML) group sought to understand how efficiently such undulating organisms can move through obstacle-laden fluids. To do so, they conducted a study comparing experiments using live worms, the nematode C. elegans, with the results of a computer model of a worm moving in a virtual environment. In the experiment, the worms swam through a very shallow pool filled with a lattice of obstructing micro-pillars while the computer simulation gave a benchmark of a worm moving blindly without sensing and response.

Surprisingly, C. elegans was able to advance much more quickly through the lattice of obstacles than through a fluid in which their movement was unimpeded.

"If the lattice is neither too tight nor too loose, the worms move much faster by threading between and pushing off the pillars," the researchers wrote.

The second surprise was that the computer simulation gave very similar results, reproducing the fast motions of the worm in the lattice, but also showing complex "life-like" behaviors that had been interpreted as coming from sensing and response of the worm to its local environment.

These results enhance our understanding of biological locomotion through tortuous environments like soils or the reproductive tract, showing how real organisms can take advantage of what seems a defiant complexity, and offer intriguing insights into how the reproductive processes of dangerous parasites might be interrupted.

The study's co-authors were: Trushant Majmudar, a post-doctoral fellow; Eric Keaveny, a former post-doctoral fellow who is now a lecturer at Imperial College London; Professor Jun Zhang; and Professor Michael Shelley.

The study was funded by grants from the National Science Foundation.
